Texture classification using transform analysis

Amr Goneid, مارى حبيب

كلية العلوم والهندسة-الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة · مصر

The work presented in this thesis deals with the application of spectral methods for texture classification. The aim of the present work is to introduce a hybrid methodology for texture classification based on a spatial domain global pre-classifier together with a spectral classifier that utilizes multiresolution transform analysis. The reason for developing a spatial pre-classifier is that many discriminating features of textures are present in the spatial domain of the texture. Of these, global features such as intensity histograms and entropies can still add significant information to the texture classification process. The pre-classifier uses texture intensity histograms to derive histogram moments that serve as global features.A spectral classifier that uses Hartley transform follows the pre-classifier. The choice of such transform was due to the fact that the Fast Hartley Transform has many advantages over the other transforms since it results in real valued arrays and requires less memory space and computational complexity. To test the performance of the whole classifier, 900 texture images were generated using mathematical texture generating functions. The images generated were of three different classes and each class is sub-classified into three sub-classes. Half of the generated samples was used to build the classifier, while the other half was used to test it.The pre-classifier was designed to identify texture classes using an Euclidean distance matching for 4 statistical moments of the intensity histograms. The pre-classifier matching accuracy is found to be 99.89%.The spectral classifier is designed on the basis of the Hartley transform to determine the image sub-class. Initially, a full resolution Hartley transform was used to obtain two orthogonal power spectral vectors. Peaks in these two vectors were detected after applying a 10% threshold and the highest 4 peaks for each image are selected and saved in position lookup tables. The matching accuracy obtained using the two classification phases (pre-classifier and spectral classifier) is 99.56%.The accuracy achieved for the single resolution classifier is high but that was achieved on the expense of space for the lookup tables. In order to investigate the effect of lowering the resolution on the size of the information needed for matching the textures, we have applied a multiresolution technique to the Hartley Transform in a restricted way by computing the Hartley spectra in decreasing resolution. In particular, a one-step resolution decrease achieves 99% matching efficiency while saving memory space by 40%. This is a minor sacrifice of less than 1% in the matching efficiency with a considerable decrease in the complexity of the present methodology.

Dispersion of Chloroform in A Saturated Porous Media

Aohl M. Ishaq, محمد حبيل أجوارد

كلية الهندسة-جامعة الملك فهد للبترول والمعادن · السعودية

An experimental investigation into the dispersion of chloroform in a saturated porous media was performed. A plexiglass sand box model was built in the laboratory, and a steady, uniform flow was established in a saturated, homogeneous, isotropic porous media. As a contaminant, a point source of chloroform solution was introduced into the media. In the initial experiments, chloroform solution was introduced as an instantaneous source, while in the later experiments it was injected as a continuous source. Samples were collected at different locations along and perpendicular to the direction of flow at regular time intervals, and the concentration of the samples were determined using the gas chromatograph. The results of the experiments were used in the analytical solution of the advection-dispersion equation to determine the longitudinal and transverse dispersion coefficients for chloroform in a saturated porous media. Also, the development of the chloroform plume and the attenuation effect was observed. Furthermore, the distribution coefficient K for chloroform was determined.

كلية الهندسة-جامعة قطر · قطر

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an extremely contagious and quickly spreading Coronavirus infestation. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)-CoV and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)-CoV, which outbreak in 2002 and 2011, and the current COVID-19 pandemic are all from the same family of coronavirus. The fatality rate due to SARS and MERS was higher than COVID-19. However, the spread of those was limited to few countries, while COVID19 affected more than 200 countries worldwide, causing over 3 million causalities and infected more than 145 million people as of April 25, 2021. Given the effects of COVID-19 on pulmonary tissues, chest radiographic imaging has become a necessity for screening and monitoring the disease. Recently, numerous studies have proposed Deep Learning approaches based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs, or ConvNets) for the automatic diagnosis of COVID-19 from chest X-rays (CXR). Although these methods achieved astonishing performance in early detection and diagnosis, they have used limited CXR repositories for evaluation, usually with a few hundred COVID-19 CXR images only. Thus, such data scarcity prevents reliable evaluation with the potential of overfitting. In addition, manual annotation of X-rays (delineation of the lung, or infection regions) is another challenge due to the extensive time and manual labor required from the physicians. Therefore, most of the proposed studies showed no or limited performance in infection localization and severi grading of COVID-19 pneumonia. In this thesis, in order to overcome the aforementioned limitations and challenges, we have conducted the following: (i) compiled the largest COVID-19 benchmark dataset, namely COVID-QU, which consists of 11,956 COVID-19, 11,263 non-COVID-19, 10,701 normal, 134 SARS, and 144 MERS CXR images, (ii) generated ground-truth lung segmentation masks for the entire COVID-QU dataset using an elegant human-machine collaborative approach, (iii) proposed a systematic approach to segment the lung, detect, localize, and quantify COVID-19 infections from CXR images, (iv) Trained and evaluated the proposed system for lung segmentation, infection segmentation, and two classification tasks: ?) COVID-19 detection from the predecessor COVID family members, SARS, and MERS, ?) COVID-19 detection from non-COVID-19 infections, and normal cases. A detailed set of experiments using several state-of-the-art ConvNets showed top performance for the lung segmentation task with Intersection over Union (IoU) of 96.11% and Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 97.99%. Besides, COVID-19 infections of various shapes and types were reliably localized with 83.05% IoU and 88.21% DSC. Moreover, the proposed system was able to discriminate between different COVID family members, which is an extremely challenging task for medical doctors without the aid of clinical data. Sensitivities of 96.94%, 79.68%, and 90.26% were achieved for classifying COVID-19, MERS, and SARS classes, respectively. Furthermore, a good performance was obtained for the second classification scheme with sensitivities of 91.52%, 93.21%, and 91.12 for COVID 19, non-COVID, and normal classes, respectively.

Determination of Optimal Well Spacing for an Oil Reservoir to Maximize Recovery Factor

سعيد الدبيب, محمد نصر , مختار محمد غدير

كلية الهندسة-جامعة طرابلس · ليبيا

The average recovery factor calculated for the whole reservoir is higher than the average recovery factor calculated from averaging the individual well recovery factor. The integrated recovery factor calculated from each well should be comped with recovery factor calculated for the reservoir as a whole using the material balance equation or the volumetric methods as a basis for the calculations. The differce betwe the two values is anindication of an inadequate well spacing for the reservoirIf (Np/N) each ≈ (Np/N)whole the distribution of the wells for the reservoir is adequate .If (Np/N) each (Np/N)whole the distribution of the wells in the reservoir is inadequate .This indication of the reservoir needs infill wells to be drilled. The number of infill wells depds on the relationship betwe recovery factor and number of wells. The infill wells location in the reservoir should be at high hydrocbon pore volume and also it should be located in the trd of the easiest permeability path of oil movemt. It was concluded that the number of wells existing in the Sha field is not adequate therefore we recommd to increase the number of the wells as per the method closed in this study. The results of this study indicate that the calculated oil production decline rate constant is differt from well to another which is an indication of viations of water influx into the reservoir.

Evaluation of New Flowback Formulation for Hydraulically Fractured Tight Gas Wells

Ahmed Ibrahim, Khaled Ibrahim , أحمد عصام حسن محمد

كلية هندسة البترول وعلوم الأرض-جامعة الملك فهد للبترول والمعادن · السعودية

The evaluation of environmentally friendly flowback additives for shale gas wells is of utmost importance to mitigate formation damage with hydraulic fracturing operations. After a hydraulic fracturing job is done, most of the fluid injected into the formation is lost and affects the overall deliverability of the formation. The effectiveness of the flowback additives such as surfactants is highly impacted by harsh environmental conditions such as high salinity, and high temperature, in addition to Lithology. This study aims to assess the performance and effectiveness of new environmentally friendly flowback additives at high salinities and temperatures and compare it to commercially used flowback additives.Different experimental analyses were conducted to screen different environmental formulations (x1, x2, x3). Surface tension measurements were conducted for four different chemical formulations at different concentrations to estimate the Critical micelle concentration (CMC). A spinning drop tensiometer was then used to measure the interfacial tension for the different chemicals with crude oil. Moreover, contact angle measurements were conducted to assess the change in the rock wettability in contact with the flowback additives. For the different experiments, seawater was used as the base fracturing fluid with a salinity of 57,000 ppm and temperatures up to 90oc.xiiPreliminary results for surface tension measurements show similar values of surface tension as commercial flowback additives. Four different formulations were used and yielded Surface tension values varied from 30 to 45 mN/m with CMC values ranging between 0.5 to 1 gpt. The different formulations showed different IFT values with the lowest IFT value of 3 mN/m in the case of x3. In addition, contact angle measurements showed changing the rock surface to be water wet after treating the rock with the flowback additives. The findings of this study will highlight the use of environmentally friendly formulations to improve the fractured fluid flowback, especially in harsh conditions of high temperature and high salinity where the conventional additives are not suitable. The findings will contribute to the development of more sustainable and environmentally conscious practices in hydraulic fracturing operations. Ultimately, the utilization of these additives can help minimize water blockage, formation damage impacts, and enhance the overall efficiency of tight gas formations production.
