The incidence of camel trypanosomosis (Guffar) caused by T. evansiin Butana plains, Eastern Sudan was surveyed using direct smear, michrohematocrit centrifugation technique ( MHCT) and card agglutinationtest for T.evansi (CATT/T. evansi). In a total of 220 blood and serumsamples, 115 (52.2%), were positive by CATT, 72 (32.7%) were positive bythe MHCT and 31 (14.1%) were positive by the wet smear preparation.Contingency table and parcel Chi2- test revealed that CATT-T.evansi wasstatistically the most sensitive technique for T. evansi followed by theMHCT and lastly the wet smear technique. The percentage packed cellvolume (PCV %) differed significantly between the diagnostic techniquesused. Thus the wet smear technique detected positive camels with the lowestPCV %. Camels infection rate with T. evansi did not differ significantly withsex. However the infection rates differed appreciably with location duringthe rainy season and between seasons irrespective of the sex of the animals.Treatment of rats infected with T. evansi isolates from Butana area withquinapyramine pro-salt made by three different manufacturers revealed thatTryquine (wockharde, India) was the most effective in clearance ofparasitaemia with in two weeks. Biquin (Star, Pakistan) and quinapyramine(Nicholas Primal, India) did not clear the parasitaemia in rats during thesame period. The results are discussed in relation to studies leading tocontrol of T. evansi in camels using chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis.
