(Heterocyclic nitrogen systems, such as pyrimidine, purine, imidazole and pyrrole, are found in many natural [ 2 ] and synthetic substances with diverse biological activities. These substances are strategic targets for the development of new therapeutic agents. As part of our project, we aim to synthesise new heterocyclic analogues and study their antioxidant and antibacterial properties. In the first part, we developed the synthesis of new pyrimidine and purine derivatives by carrying out nucleobase (cytosine, adenine and guanine) condensation and cyclisation reactions under basic conditions with electrophilic agents such as 4-bromoacetophenone, benzoin, curcumin and pyrimidine-4,5-dicarboxylate. In the second part, we evaluated the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the synthesised products. In vitro evaluation of antioxidant activity was carried out using the DPPH and ABTS radical reduction method. Overall, the results show that the molecules evaluated have real antioxidant capacity, with some of them even displaying greater activity than standard antioxidants, such as ascorbic acid and BHT. The in vitro assessment of antimicrobial activity was carried out using the disc or well diffusion technique. The results obtained indicate that the products evaluated are sensitive to certain micro-organisms. The structural determination of the synthesised heterocycles was carried out using various IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic methods, and was confirmed by elemental analysis).

Humidification and Dehumidification (HDH) is a promising and economical technique for desalination. However, conventional humidifiers and dehumidifiers used in HDH systems have low heat & mass transfer coefficients. Specially, high heat and mass transfer resistances of noncondensable gases in dehumidifier result in poor heat transfer and lower equipment’s effectiveness, which makes large volume of equipment and higher cost. In this regard, bubble column humidifiers and dehumidifiers in HDH desalination is groundbreaking method that has the advantage of high heat and mass transfer coefficient with effectiveness (so lower equipment size) because of condensation/evaporation through numerous gas bubbles in the liquid pool instead of any solid surface.Hence this study commences with a critical review on usage of bubble column in HDH desalination, emphasizing analytical and experimental work of bubble columns. The study shows that in literature work, heat and mass transfer mechanism inside bubble column dehumidifier was analyzed inadequately through analytical modelling that involved assumptions and conflicts. Little attention was paid to mass transfer mechanism without consideration of the gas side (bubble) transport mechanism. In addition, shallow column (L/D <10) effects were not incorporated in existing models. Therefore, in the present study, a detailed mathematical model has been developed to accurately predict the heat and mass transfer mechanisms inside the bubble column dehumidifier for shallow bubble column units while incorporating and dealing with all heat & mass transfer coefficients and inadequacies that were present in previous literature models. The proposed model is validated with literature experimental results and found in closed agreement with accuracy level of 11%. Parametric study of operational parameters such as airflow rate (1 SCFM to 3 SCFM) , air temperature (45°C-70°C) and operating pressure (2bar-8bar) reveal the behaviour of all resistances and performance of bubble column dehumidifier. Mass transfer resistance is found to be high in term of magnitude i.e. 7.5 s/m while bubble side resistance is the lowest among all resistances (0.0002K/kW). Bubble diameter is found to be the most sensitive parameter, with an increment of only 1 mm, mass transfer resistance and bubble inside resistance increased by 25% and 36% respectively. Shallow column effects are presented in the form of critical height. For critical height of 5cm, thermal resistances exponentially decreased from 0.12 K/kw to 0.06 K/kw. In addition to this, the novel configuration of bubble column humidifier and dehumidifier is examined experimentally with water heated cycle and air heated cycle for different air temperatures and water levels with five airflow rates. Water heated cycle is found to have better performance in term of productivity (0.6 liter/h) and GOR (0.4) than air heated cycle. The experimental setup is modified in term of double stage humidification with reheating for air heated cycle which enhanced its performance producing distillate of 0.3 liter/h at GOR of 0.4 with an increment of 7.5% heat input.
