AbstractWireless sensor networks have been widely used. Energy problem is one of the importantproblems influencing the complete application. Sensor nodes use batteries as power source andhave quite limit lifetime. So, efficiency of energy management becomes a key requirement inwireless sensor network design. The efficiency of these networks is highly dependent on routingprotocols directly affecting the network lifetime. Clustering is one of the most populartechniques preferred in routing operations. In this work we propose a novel energy efficientprotocol for wireless sensor networks based on bat algorithm (ECO-BAT) to prolong thenetwork lifetime. We use an objective function that generates an optimal number of sensorclusterswith cluster heads to minimize the transmission cost. The performance of the proposedapproach is compared with LEACH and EEMOB protocols using the MATLAB environment. The results obtained are interesting in terms of energy saving and prolongation of the networklifetime.

The environmental concern raised due to the use of conventional fuel for energy production which results in increasing the level of CO2 and to remediate industrial dumped organic pollutants especially dyes into the ocean body, demands for alternatives renewable energy resources. There is an increasing need to develop new materials or improve the existing options to exploit the available carbon-neutral energy resources such as hydrogen fuel using photo-electrochemical (PEC) water splitting or degradation of pollutants using solar light. Both processes require the design and synthesis of new materials that are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, capable of harvesting the maximum range of the solar spectrum, electrically and chemically stable, with suitable band-edge potentials to perform the function. In this project, we accomplished the synthesis of pristine Cu2O nanoparticles consisting and hybrid nanomaterial with the composition Au and Cu2O. Due to the low bandgap ~2.1 eV of Cu2O and its suitable conduction band edge positions, it is among the most favorite semiconductors available for visible light base photocatalytic applications. The hybridization of Au and Cu2O improved the solar absorption efficiency, photocatalytic activity, and the chemical stability of these materials under working conditions.

Early detection of liver cancer remains limited by the slow pace and invasiveness of current testing methods. This study proposes a single-walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (SWCNT-FET) designed to detect hexanal—a volatile organic compound (VOC) elevated in liver cancer—directly from exhaled breath. The device is modeled in Quantum ATK using a semi-empirical Extended Hückel Hamiltonian within the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) framework, emphasizing realistic contact physics by employing metallic SWCNT electrodes instead of conventional metal films. Zigzag channels with (11,0) and (12,0) chiralities are examined to analyze how geometry and contact matching influence charge transport. Simulations include current–voltage (I–V) characteristics and transmission spectra under gate biases from 0 to 2 V, with particular focus on an operating point at 1.4 V. Upon hexanal adsorption, the device shows a consistent conductance quench and the emergence of anti-resonances near the Fermi level. Among the tested configurations, the (11,0) channel paired with metallic SWCNT contacts exhibits the most pronounced conductance change and clearest gate-tunable response, suggesting enhanced sensitivity without compromising device stability. Selectivity is also evaluated against common breath VOCs (e.g., acetone, ethanol), and a noise-aware procedure is outlined to estimate the detection limit from simulated transfer curves. Overall, the findings indicate that well-matched all-carbon contacts, combined with biasing near 1.4 V, can amplify the hexanal signature in SWCNT-FETs—supporting the feasibility of a compact, non-invasive breath test for early liver cancer screening.

This thesis endeavors to tackle the challenges of integrating renewable energy sources (RESs) in power networks from a planning perspective by introducing smart control strategies and developing new planning techniques. First, several smart photovoltaic inverter control (PVIC) schemes are proposed to provide different reactive power support limits for planning smart distribution networks. The proposed PVIC schemes are applied to maximize the penetration levels of nearby wind distributed generation (DG) units. The results show significant increase in wind-DG penetration limits by utilizing PVIC schemes. Second, an adaptive planning approach is proposed for planning active network management (ANM) schemes and DG limits in power networks by incorporating the random participation of customer-owned DG installations. The proposed planning approach features flexibility of changing the ANM schemes of DG units adaptively according to the actual connected customer DG installations in the power network. A two-phase planning problem is formulated to find the optimal ANM schemes and DG limits to maximize the utility DG penetration in the power network, considering customer DG installations. It is found that the optimal ANM scheme will vary with the number, locations, and sizes of customer DGs and thus it is recommended, in order to achieve maximum DG penetration, that DG controllers should be capable of switching between various ANM schemes. Third, a utility reactive power planning model is proposed to determine the optimal investment decisions for utilizing the reactive power support (RPS) options from customer-owned PV inverters, as an alternative to the conventional solutions of RPS. The planning approach considers inverter oversizing and active power limitation as possible investment options that can be flexibly adapted to determine the RPS limits from existing and newly planned PV inverters. The planning problem is formulated to minimize the cost of energy losses by investing in the RPS options from PV inverters. The results show effective utilization of PV inverters and significant cost reductions. All the presented planning problems are tested on a realistic 33-kV 16-bus distribution system and formulated as either nonlinear programming (NLP) or mixed-integer NLP (MINLP) problems in an optimal power flow (OPF) framework.
