This work presents a comprehensive review and comparison of the performance of multi-effect desalination systems (MED) operated by mechanical vapor compression, using different energy sources and compressor types. The literature shows that the unit cost varies between 0.842 and 10 $/m3, while the specific power consumption ranges from 3.6 to 193 kWh/m3. The study suggests further research is needed in areas such as zero liquid discharge capabilities, wind energy operation, and heat exchanger component materials. Furthermore, the work proposes the use of a parallel cross feed multi-effect system with a twin-screw compressor and water injection to improve system performance. The system results in less specific power consumption (15% reduction in SPC at 70 °C steam temperature), greater exergy efficiency (16.3% higher on average), and lower freshwater production costs ($3.14/m3 for twin-screw compressor configuration at 8 number of effects). Additionally, the work presents a model for a forward feed multi-effect system that utilizes a twin-screw compressor with water injection to enhance the isentropic efficiency of the system. The study compares the MED-MVC system with a normal compressor and a twin-screw compressor with water injection. Using the twin-screw compressor results in lower unit costs of freshwater production ($4.23/m3 for the normal compressor configuration vs. $3.14/m3 for the twin-screw compressor configuration at 8 number of effects) and higher exergy efficiency (16.3% higher on average). The study examines how operating conditions and external factors such as interest rates and electricity costs affect the final product cost.
