The recent trend towards energy-efficient and environment-aware network operations has mandated the development of novel green network planning paradigms. Energy is becoming a main concern nowadays due to the increasing demands on natural energy resources. Base stations (BS) consume up to 80percent of the total energy expenditure in a cellular network. Previous works focused on techniques such as discontinuous BS transmission, BS sleep modes, and BS on-off switching after complete network deployment. In this thesis, we propose and evaluate a proactive green radio network planning approach that jointly optimizes base station locations and generates the BS on-off switching patterns based on the changing traffic conditions in the network. In this thesis, we formulate the radio network planning problem with green considerations as an integer optimization problem. The formulated problem is solved using heuristic optimization for large size networks whereas optimal solutions are obtained for small size networks. Planning is performed based on a proactive approach starting with the lowest traffic demand until reaching the highest traffic demand indicating the worst case scenario in the network. The proposed approach is compared to the reactive approach where operators try to adapt their network to traffic changes after network deployment. Performance results are presented for various case studies and evaluated taking into account practical network planning considerations. Results demonstrate considerable energy savings through dynamic adaptation of the number of simultaneously active BSs.

In recent years, concerns are being raised about the potential harmful effects of emerging pollutants (EPs) on human and aquatic lives. Extensive research is being conducted on developing treatment approaches to target this new class of toxic pollutants. Studies focused on biological (enzyme-based) methods have shown a potential as greener and possibly more economical alternatives to other treatment approaches, such as chemical methods. Peroxidase enzymes are being exploited for water remediation and have proven to be effective in degrading a variety of EPs present in water. However, their high cost still represents a major bottleneck towards their extensive use and exploitation in water remediation. Recent advances in recombinant DNA technology can be used to produce a large number of active enzymes at low costs. The current study focused on the use of recombinantly produced novel members of bacterial peroxidases, named dye decolorizing peroxidases, to study their effectiveness in degrading a number of diverse EPs. In this context, a sensitive bioanalytical MRM-based assay was developed to detect a mixture of 31 EPs and to examine their potential degradation by a panel of bacterial rDyPs. The results showed that not all rDyPs behaved similarly in their abilities to degrade EPs. Some rDyPs showed a promising potential to degrade some EPs while others were ineffective. Additionally, the role of redox mediators for effective EP degradation by rDyPs was also examined. Our studies showed for the first time that recombinant bacterial DyPs can be used to degrade caffeic acid, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, acrylamide, gemfibrozil, sulfamethoxazole, venlafaxine, biochanin A, prometryn and 3-Methyl-2benzothiazolinone hydrazone, MCPA, penicillin GK and phenytoin.

Algae are a potentially rich source of metabolites including proteins, lipids, anti-oxidants such as poly-phenols.The present work is moving to wards an evaluation way that is very exploited in Algeria. Its main objective is the study of the characterization of some bio-chemical elements as well as the metallic contamination by three trace metals namely Zinc, Copper and Lead, at the level of the brown alga Cystoseira stricta sp of the west coast Algerian. The result sindicate a high yield of crude extract (8.8%). In addition, the brown alga Cystoseira stricta sp is characterized by a high level of total poly-phenols ( 5.43 mg EAG / g DM).The study of the antioxidant power by two methods, the trapping of the radical DPPH, and the quantification of the total antioxidant capacity, reveals the presence of antioxidant properties for the studied extract. The evaluation of the sample shows that the brown alga studied is low in lipids whose content is evaluated at (4%).On the basis of the chemical analysis, the algae have the advantage of being rich in proteins and rawash whose contents are of the order of (21%) and (19.4%) respectively.Regarding the metal contamination, our alga has higher levels of zinc followed by copper and lead, however these rates remain relatively questionable given the short period of our sampling. All these results obtained in vitro are only a first step in the search for biologically active natural substances from marine algae. So for futur long-term studies should be considered to confirm the bioactivity of marine algae and their bioaccumulation potential
