Learning a foreign language requires mastering its four main skills, including reading, listening, writing and speaking. This latter involves pronunciation, which is a language aspectthat is often regarded as a hurdle by many EFL learners. Having a correct pronunciation isconsidered crucial that is why many foreign language learners want to acquire it and improveit as much as possible. However, only a few teaching programs are included to target thisskills. In light of this, the current thesis aims to explore first-year EFL learners' perceptionstowards the use of English podcasts in the purpose of enhancing their pronunciation since itinvolves exposure to native speakers. In order to accomplish this goal, this study follows anon-experimental design, implemented with 60 first-year BA students of English as ForeignLanguage at the University of Bejaia. Moreover, it employs a mixed method, which bases onboth quantitative and qualitative tools for the data collection; the study method employs astudents' questionnaire as a quantitative research tool; while, it uses an online interviewposted for teachers of English at the same university to investigate their perspectivesconcerning the issue under study. The findings disclosed positive attitudes of the participantsregarding the implementation of this new material to enhance EFL students' pronunciationbecause it can be practical, enjoyable and interesting while creating opportunities to listen tonative speakers in the educational field. The teachers' perceptions also were positive as thedata revealed. The study entails some suggestion for an advantageous use of podcast in EFL classrooms.

Magnetic Nanowires as Materials for Cancer Cell Destruction

Current cancer therapies are highly cytotoxic and their delivery to exclusively the affected siteis poorly controlled, resulting in unavoidable and often severe side effects. In an effort to overcomesuch issues, magnetic nanoparticles have been recently gaining relevance in the areas of biomedicalapplications and therapeutics, opening pathways to alternative methods. This led to the concept ofmagnetic particle hyperthermia in which magnetic nano beads are heated by a high power magneticfield. The increase in temperature kills the cancer cells, which are more susceptible to heat incomparison to healthy cells. In this dissertation, the possibility to kill cancer cells with magnetic nanowires is evaluated. The idea is to exploit a magnetomechanical effect, where nanowires cause cancer cell death throughvibrating in a low power magnetic field. Specifically, the magnetic nanowires effects to cells in cultureand their ability to induce cancer cell death, when combined with an alternating magnetic field, wasinvestigated.Nickel and iron nanowires of 35 nm diameter and 1 to 5 μm long were synthesized by electrodepositioninto nanoporous alumina templates, which were prepared using a two-step anodizationprocess on highly pure aluminum substrates. For the cytotoxicity studies, the nanowires were addedto cancer cells in culture, varying the incubation time and the concentration. The cell-nanowireinteraction was thoroughly studied at the cellular level (mitochondrial metabolic activity, cell membraneintegrity and, apoptosis/necrosis assay), and optical level (transmission electron and confocalmicroscopy). Furthermore, to investigate their therapeutic potential, an alternating magnetic fieldwas applied varying its intensity and frequency. After the magnetic field application, cells healthwas measured at the mitochondrial activity level.Cytotoxicity results shed light onto the cellular tolerance to the nanowires, which helped inestablishing the appropriate nanowire concentrations to use the nanowires + alternating magneticfield combination as a cancer treatment. Different levels of cancer cell death were achieved bychanging the incubation time of the nanowires with the cells and the alternating magnetic fieldparameters. Cell viability was significantly affected in terms of mitochondrial activity and cellmembrane integrity after applying the treatment (nanowires + alternating magnetic field) using alow-frequency alternating magnetic.Theoretical calculations considering the magnetic and viscous torques showed that the nanowiresvibrate as a consequence of the applied magnetic field. This, alongside the fact that no temperatureincrease was measured during the treatment, makes the magnetomechanical effect the most probableaction mechanism in the applied treatment that is inducing cell death.Inducing cancer cell death via magnetomechanical action using magnetic nanowires resulted inkilling up to 60% of cancer cells with only 10 minutes of treatment. The required magnetic field fortreatment is in a low power regime, which is safe, does not cause any discomfort to the patients, and can be generated with compact and cheap instruments.

An automated approach to choral part writing

Hadi Fakhreddine, Faysal Abu Khzam

We present an automated model for distributing choral parts in the style of conventional four part writing, given a melody and the chord progressions. Our system is scalable and allows arrangements for more than four voices, if required. We use enumeration and support it with the constraints imposed by the nature of the problem. Our implementation can successfully transform most music pieces written for solo voices and instruments - old and modern - into singable a capella choral arrangements.

Modeling the effect of spacers and biofouling on forward osmosis performance

María José, Saikaly, Pascal E.

Currently, the most utilized desalination technology is reverse osmosis (RO), where a membrane is used as a physical barrier to separate the salts from the seawater, using high hydraulic pressure as driving force. A major problem in RO systems is biofouling, caused by severe growth of bacterial biofilms. Both, the need of an external energy input, as well as biofouling, impose a high cost on RO operation.Forward osmosis (FO) is an alternative membrane process that uses an osmotic pressure difference as driving force. FO uses a concentrated draw solution to generate high osmotic pressure, which extracts water across a semi permeable membrane from a feed solution. One of the main advantages of FO is the limited amount of external energy required to extract water from the feed solution. The objective of this research is the assessment of the impact of spacers, separating the membrane sheets, and biofouling on the FO system performance. This type of studies allow the optimization of membrane devices and operational conditions. For this, a two dimensional numerical model for FO systems was developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This model allowed the evaluation of the impact of (i) spacers and (ii) biofilm, and (iii) the combined impact of spacers and biofilm on the performance of FO systems. The results obtained showed that the presence of spacers improved the performance of FO systems. Cavity configuration spacer gave the higher water flux across the membrane in clean systems; whereas for biofouled systems, the submerged configuration showed a better performance. In absence of spacers, the thickness or amount of biofilm is inversely proportional with the water flux. Furthermore, membrane surface coverage of the biofilm is more important than the amount of biofilm in terms of the impact on the performance. The numerical model can be adapted with other parameters (e.g. membrane and spacer thickness, feed and draw solution, solution concentration, etc.) to predict the impact of biofilm on FO systems under different experimental conditions. The use of numerical modeling may contribute to faster development of economic viable FO based desalination systems.

Our study seeks to benefit from cinematic theory first: as an establishment of a cinematic semiology that examines and takes into account its specificity, and in understanding it more as a detail of the general Swiss semiology that is burdened and laden with linguistic dimensions. This criticism aims to establish a new image of cinema freed from the shackles of a closed system. Cinema thinks through the image, so the subject of women is a formation. Visual, we try to understand it as a multiplicity of cinematic wholes, and in the process of cinematic narration according to theme and absence through presence in the films "Al-Wahrani" and "Beyond the Mirror" by Nadia Sharabi.
