Malaria is a global public health problem, resulting in tow million deaths per year .Themajority of death cases are due to the most severe form of malaria caused by Plasmodiumfalciparum. As a result, efforts were directed toward the development of new effectivemedications intended for the treatment of this endemic disease. Atovaqoune is a newtreatment option, showed an improvement in malaria treatment. Although Atovaqoune isan effective medication, it has its own limitations.Atovaqoune is highly lipophilic compound (water solubility < 0.2 µg/ mL), has low watersolubility and low absorption, hence low bioavailability (< 10% in the fasted state).Accordingly, increasing atovaqoune aqueous solubility will improve its pharmacokineticprofile in particular bioavailability, thus improving its effectiveness and ability toadminister the drug through different routs of administration. So that, our goal was to develop atovaqoune prod rug that possesses increased aqueoussolubility by linking water soluble moiety to the 3- hydroxyl group, via chemical synthesis.Purification techniques including extraction, re-crystallization and column chromatographywere used. Identity confirmation was done using, IR, NMR and LC/MS. Based on purityand identity results; in vitro kinetic studies using the HPLC instrument were performed atpH 2.2, 5.5 and 7.4.ATQ succinate (ProD1) has been successfully synthesized, purified and evaluated. T1/2 ofProD1 at pH 2.2, 5.5 and 7.4 is 28.8 days, 2.2 days, 3.2 days, respectively. It can be concluded from these data, that ProD1 is converted into ATQ in pH dependentmanner, and the hydrolysis of the prodrug follows first order kinetics, as the data plottedgives a straight line, and the Kobs is nearly constant. Concisely, modifying atovaqounestructure may result in enhancing its pharmacokinetic profile mainly absorption into bodytissues, consequently increasing efficacy and ability to formulate atovaqoune in differentdosage forms. Keywords: Malaria, drug resistance, atovaquone, bioavailability, prodrugs .

Soil contamination is a serious issue caused by faulty industrial activities such as chemical leakage and poor waste disposal. Acid contamination of soils is a common problem within fertilizer and petrochemical industries. The problem occurs when leaked or wrongly-disposed acids infiltrate to the ground and react with active materials like carbonate soils. The problem is aggravated when the leaking acids interact with carbonate soil causing swelling of the foundations of pumps and pipes handling such acids and thus leading to more leaks. All soil properties could be alerted due to acid contamination, especially the volume. Consequently, all structural facilities and infrastructures in the vicinity of the contaminated soils will experience unfavorable upheaval. On the other hand, when the leaked quantities are large, soil washouts may result in creating large voids and subsequent subsidence. In eastern Saudi Arabia, most of the soils used for road bases and under pavement and walkways are calcareous in nature. These carbonate soils are susceptible to large volume change when attacked by acids. Moreover, there are huge petrochemical and fertilizer industries in the area that produce or utilize different acids. This research was intended to examine the volume and microstructural changes of calcareous soils due to interaction with sulfuric and phosphoric acids. Thus, the correlation between acid concentrations and swelling is very important to investigate taking into account the changes in mineralogy and microstructure.Sulfuric and phosphoric acid were utilized to react with two calcareous soils in the laboratory under controlled conditions. Soil samples were prepared in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) molds, which can resist aggressive acids. Then, these molds were placed in large containers and instrumented with linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) to measure volume change. After acidification, the contaminated samples were subjected to compositional analysis and strength assessment. Volume change and acid concentration were proportional except the case of sulfuric acid with the non-plastic marl. This happened because high concentration sulfuric acid reacted severely with carbonate minerals resulting in a blockage of the way for the acid to infiltrate into the whole sample. Moreover, all of expansion outcomes were interpreted with morphological and compositional analysis and strength assessment of contaminated samples.

Adenoid hypertrophy is a common disorder seen in children manifesting clinically by bilateral nasal block, snoring during sleep, mouth breathing, and difficulty in breathing during sleep and sleepapnea. Due to non-cooperation by children for physical examination, often diagnosis is based mainly on radiological investigation. We conducted study to evaluate the relation between clinical symptoms severity score In relation to the size of the adenoid with nasopharyngeal size. The symptoms included for clinical severity scoring is bilateral nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, snoring during sleep, sleep apnea (Frequent awakening during sleep) and difficulty in breathing during sleep. Each symptom was graded based on the number of days affected in a week.Lateral x-ray Nasopharynx investigation was done for the estimation of adenoid and nasopharyngeal size. 50 patients were included in the study with 35 boys and 15 girls aged 4 to 12 years, the clinical symptoms severity score correlated well with adenoid nasopharyngeal ratio (person correlation). The presence of statistically significant correlation between the Clinical symptoms severity score and Adenoid-nasopharynx ratio, according to the moral standards of moral significance statistical sig, all of which were less than (0.05). So significant correlation was observed between clinical severity score and adenoid nasopharynx ratio. Clinical symptom severity score is a valuable tool for the prediction of significant adenoid hypertrophy.
