The effects of “pre-” and “within-task” planning on L2 written accuracy: A longitudinal Study in the context of ADEC’s English Continuous Rich Tasks (ECART

Tamer Ahmed ElSaid ElBoraei Ibrahim, Yasemin Yildiz

The present study investigated the effects of two types of task planning; “task rehearsal” and “unpressured within-task” planning on Arabic-speaking learners’ written accuracy in English. The research adopted a longitudinal mixed methods approach to collect detailed descriptive data from a sample of 4 students in grade seven in one of ADEC’s schools in Abu Dhabi. The objectives of the research were to measure the effects of repeating the same task along with implementing the process of the “English Continuous Assessment Rich Task” (ECART) which represented the “unpressured within-task” planning. The data analyses of both “repeated” and “unpressured” written production were conducted by means of measuring the changes in the participants’ written accuracy in English. Data analysis was done by comparing the numbers and percentages of linguistic errors across all writing tasks. The results of both the “repeated” task and the “unpressured task” showed a significant improvement in the students’ written accuracy in English.

Furniture industry is one of the most important forest-wood based industries, which provides local employment and acts as suitable enterprise in rural areas. Singa area is a prominent example of furniture industry in Sudan. This study was conducted at Singa during 1994-1996, to estimate production, effectiveness, causes of initiation, problems and socio-economic impacts of the furniture industry on the rural community.Open-ended questionnaires, visits, interviews and collection of secondary data were used in this study. The data was entered in the computer using QPRO program and analyzed using SAS program, frequencies, means, maxima, minima and correlations were obtained. The results showed that, most respondents hired their workshops, which indicates that this activity is carried by professionals. The bulk of the owners ages lies within the activity age. Most of the owners were local inhabitants and 50% of them had basic education. Owners who had higher education look at this industry as an investment. It was found that furniture industry consumed about 758m3 of wood per year. More than 90% of the owners related the initiation of furniture industry in Singa to the availability of raw material (wood) and about 40% related that to the availability of trained labour force.Average machine efficiency was found to be 10.7% because of external factors. Classification of workshops showed that nearly 36% of workshops were medium size class. The main problem of this industry is the increasing prices of inputs and the high rates of taxes. Most of the production was marketed in Singa. The main marketing problem was found to be the high rates of the production customs. About 70% of the owners were self financed. About 60% of the owners felt that higlig is the most preferred species followed by sunt. Higlig was preferred for its lower prices and bright colour. Conversion factor of the workshops was estimated to be 41% which is seen to be reasonable. The economic role played by this industry to the rural community is appreciated. The contribution of the industry to the social services in Singa amounted to nearly Ls 12 millions during the year 1994.

Biosorption D'un Colorant Azoïque Et D'un Métal Sur Un Déchet D'origine Marine

Towards Enabling Environmental Social Enterprises: Two Case Studies from Egypt

Rana Emad Kamaly, Shahjahan Bhuiyan

Social enterprises (SEs) and environmental social enterprises (ESEs) are emerging as promising potential players in addressing global and Egyptian social and environmental challenges. Operating as a hybrid model of financial sustainability and environmental and social impact, ESEs operate through innovative business models to address community issues, waste management, and resource scarcity through financial sustainability. However, there is a lack of research on ESEs operations, challenges, and the enabling factors that can support their growth and impact. This study explores the enabling factors and challenges affecting ESEs in Egypt through qualitative research, analyzing two case studies from Egypt by conducting semi-structured in-depth interviews with ESE founders, employees, beneficiaries, and customers, in addition to experts in the field of SEs, including donors, academia, corporate social responsibility (CSR) professionals, and other stakeholders. The study findings identified that the enabling factors for ESE’s growth and performance are both external and internal. The external factors include regulatory frameworks, funding access, partnerships, and social and environmental factors. The internal factors include organizational culture (including leadership, culture, and structure), performance measurement systems, and access to markets and technology. The research identifies key obstacles and strategic necessities for enabling and aiding the growth, sustainability, and scalability of ESEs. Based on the interviews with the different stakeholders and the case studies, recommendations are proposed to support the improvement of the ecosystem and internal organizational processes to enable these enterprises to generate sustainable income while addressing Egypt’s socioeconomic and environmental issues. This study contributes to the literature by offering actionable insights to facilitate the growth of this important, promising emerging sector of ESEs, aiming to bridge the limited research on the topic.

Modeling acid fracture conductivity to stimulate tight carbonates

MD Rahman, Zhonghua Wang

Acid fracturing is a well stimulation operation commonly applied in low permeable carbonate reservoirs. Tight carbonates with high storability are good candidates for acid fracturing. The success of an acid fracturing treatment depends on the fracture penetration distance and the conductivity. This thesis presents a program integrating fracture geometry, acid flow field, fracture surface characterization and closure model to calculate the conductivity. A 2D fracture geometry model is used to give the fracture length and average width. Acid flow field is simulated by fully implicit method. Fracture surface is characterized by a geological statistical parameter and surface profile is generated by Matlab. A new closure model is proposed based on a 2D surfaces contact algorithm. The resulting conductivity is used to evaluate the incremental productivity. The effects of treatment parameters, fracture geometry, surface characteristics and closure stress on the conductivity are investigated. This work would predict conductivity and productivity at different condition and help to adjust the treatment parameters to give optimal productivity. Solution procedure developed in this thesis is summarized below: Step 1: Calculate fracture average width and half-length using fracture geometry model with reservoir data and treatment parameter input. Step 2: Simulate the pressure field of acid flow in the fracture space. Step 3: Generate fracture surface profile at the end of injection. Two rough surfaces are generated by Matlab based on the log normal distribution of fracture width. Step 4: Simplify the contact between two rough surfaces as contact between a rough surface and a smooth one. Step 5: Generate the fracture width profile with no closure stress by bringing the two surfaces into contact. Once the contact occurs, closure stress is no longer zero. Step 6: Calculate the fracture width profile after fracture closes with fracture closure model. Step 7: Calculate the fracture conductivity and incremental productivity. Keywords: acid fracturing, width profile, fracture closure, treatment parameter, conductivity.
