This research work deal with the conversion of solar energy to electrical energy by using photovoltaic cells. The research projects deals fundamentally with attempts to extract the maximum amount of power from the PV cells. The work also incorporated a survey of the basic principles and electric characteristics of the photovoltaic devises. It also covered a comprehensive analysis of the amount of solar insulation from fourteen meteorological stations in various regions in Sudan. This study indicated that Sudan is one of the best locations for solar energy utilization in the world. It has tremendous prospects for the utilization of this clean source of energy to provide a good proportion of the Sudan energy needs and specifically for rural electrification and development. To extract the maximum amount of power from the PV cells two systems have been developed, constructed and tested. The first system is a sun tracker which has been proved to be viable and gave an appreciable improvement in the amount of collected energy. The second system is a maximum power tracker which made use of a sample-and-hold circuit to indicate the trend in the variation of PV output power and used a PWM chopper to control the current while seeking for the maximum power point.A PWM current fed inverter has also been developed, in order to provide alternating currents from the available direct currents. This makes the PV system more useful for supplying the common domestic and other small power loads. The importance of this research work is associated with its tacking of a field which has tremendous future prospects for development in Sudan. Modern technological techniques have been simplified and adapted for local implementation with the objective of acquiring some useful expertise and with efforts to locally construct an economically viable PV power plant which can complete favouably with the more advanced products from industrialized countries.
