Recherche sur la dynamique éolienne dans la plaine du Tidikelt (Sahara méridional algérien), en vue de la protection de la ville d’In–Salah contre le risque d’ensablement

Nouar Boulghobra, Hadda Dridi

Quantifying the Impact of Human Actions on the Energy Performance of a Residential Building

Nelson King, Elie Azar, Samir Elhedhli, Zainab Aldhanhani

جامعة خليفة · الامارات

Buildings consume a significant amount of energy and are often the target of large-scale energy saving initiatives and policies. In recent years, there has been a growing interest to evaluate how occupants and facility managers operate buildings, in an effort to find fast and low-cost energy saving solutions. However, human-focused building energy research remains scarce in the literature compared to technology-focused research. Current studies are also mostly limited by simplistic analysis approaches, overlooking potential uncertainty and combined effects of operation parameters. Furthermore, the case studies and application are mostly originating from western countries with results that are not necessarily applicable to buildings subjected to extreme weather conditions such as the ones encountered in the Arabian Gulf countries. The aim of this research is to propose and apply a framework to (1) quantify the influence of actions taken by people (e.g., occupants or facility managers) on the energy use of a residential building, (2) study potential combined or synergetic effects of parameters, (3) evaluate how the building responds to uncertainty in human actions, and (4) use the findings to recommend human-focused energy conservation solutions. A three-phase methodology was developed including data collection, development, and validation of a Building Performance Simulation (BPS) model, and a comprehensive parametric variation. The methodology was then applied on a prototype single-family villa in Kuwait. Results indicate that changing the setpoint temperature setting of the Air Conditioning (AC) system is the most influential parameters studied, which was expected given the extremely hot climate of Kuwait. A 2 °C change in this parameter can lead to variations in energy use exceeding 10% from the base case levels. More importantly, building energy consumption can change between +30% and -20% from current levels if occupants adopt extreme high-energy or low-energy use patterns, respectively. The findings are significant as they quantify, on the hand, the risk from inefficient occupant behavior, and on the other, the opportunity to achieve important energy savings from responsible energy conservation practices.

كلية العلوم الانسانية والاجتماعية-الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة · مصر

Conjunctions function as cohesive and text building elements in Modern Standard Arabic. They play various semantic and discursive roles at different textual levels: phrase, clause, sentence, paragraph and discourse (Al-Batal, 1990).This study investigates the linguistic behavior of three Arabic adversative conjunctions, namely ʼinnamā, baynamā, and bal.It draws its data mainly from the sub-corpus of Shruq Columns (2,067,137 words) in the Arabicourpus. A random sample has been collected for ʼinnamā and bal, covering 50% of their instances in the corpus. On the other hand, all the instances of baynamā with the adversative meaning have been analyzed due to the fact that it does not take on this meaning in the corpus text frequently. The thesis examines the main lexico-grammatical patterns, collocational behavior, and semantic prosody of these conjunctions. The results show that ʼinnamā and bal share some of the lexico-grammatical patterns and collocational behavior, while baynamā has its unique patterns. ʼinnamā and baynamā show no clear positive or negative semantic prosody, while one of bal's grammatical patterns has a clear negative semantic prosody. In addition to that, the three conjunctions also have similar collocational behavior. While some phenomena in the behavior of the conjunctions can be attributed to similarities or differences in their meanings, other aspects of their behavior can be understood only through future diachronic investigations. The study ultimately aims at contributing to pedagogical issues concerning the teaching of these conjunctions by providing a more comprehensive picture of their linguistic behavior. Moreover, findings of the current study could contribute to the updating of teaching materials and Arabic Foreign Language writing textbooks.

The Linguistic and Literary Aspects of Translating Two Surahs of the Qur'an: A Comparative Evaluation

Mohammad Riyad Jazzar, Dhiya'a Saqr Shaheen Jalahma

كلية الاداب-جامعة البحرين · البحرين

The present study aims at shedding some light on the analysis of various translations into English of two selected surahs (chapters) from the Holy Qur'an with the main focus on the comparison of related linguistic and literary aspects. The ultimate objective of this study is to find out which translation of these two surahs is more acceptable amongst the other versions. It includes five chapters: an introduction, methodology, review of literature, findings and analysis based on the various translations of the two chosen surahs, and lastly a conclusion that sums up the work and provides some suggestions and implementations on further researching about the translations of the meanings of the Holy Qur'an. The study discusses differences in various translations of two surahs given by five well-known translators of the Holy Qur'an; (1) Arthur J. Arberry, (2) Muhammad Asad, (3) N.J. Dawood, (4) S. Abul A'Ala Maududi and (5) The Presidency of Islamic Research (P.O.LR). The procedure in this study is based on a profound analysis of various translations of two chosen surahs (Al-Takathur and Al-Nasr) and a careful comparison of their linguistic and literary aspects. The outcome of my judgment is based on the famous interpretations of The Holy Qur'an by Al-Zamakhshari, Al-Qurtubi, Ibn-Kathir, Al-Razi, Al-Zuhaili and Al-Sabooni. Therefore, the best translation of the five is chosen and -in some cases- a modified translation is suggested by the researcher. In conclusion, translating the Holy Qur'an requires not only the surface meaning of the words, but it definitely needs a more profound knowledge of both linguistic and literary aspects of the words of Allah. Based on this, the study concludes that no translation can replace the words of Allah in the Qur'an and no one can even produce a single verse that could match it. we [Say, if the whole of mankind and jinns were to gather together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof; even if they backed up each other with help and support. Q17:88] (P.O.I.R 1985: 805). Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to test it." They were to each other supporters (Al-Isra: 88)
