Covariance matrices are ubiquitous in computational sciences, typically describing the correlation of elements of large multivariate spatial data sets. For example, covari- ance matrices are employed in climate/weather modeling for the maximum likelihood estimation to improve prediction, as well as in computational ground-based astronomy to enhance the observed image quality by filtering out noise produced by the adap- tive optics instruments and atmospheric turbulence. The structure of these covariance matrices is dense, symmetric, positive-definite, and often data-sparse, therefore, hier- archically of low-rank. This thesis investigates the performance limit of dense matrix computations (e.g., Cholesky factorization) on covariance matrix problems as the number of unknowns grows, and in the context of the aforementioned applications. We employ recursive formulations of some of the basic linear algebra subroutines (BLAS) to accelerate the covariance matrix computation further, while reducing data traffic across the memory subsystems layers. However, dealing with large data sets (i.e., covariance matrices of billions in size) can rapidly become prohibitive in memory footprint and algorithmic complexity. Most importantly, this thesis investigates the tile low-rank data format (TLR), a new compressed data structure and layout, which is valuable in exploiting data sparsity by approximating the operator. The TLR com- pressed data structure allows approximating the original problem up to user-defined numerical accuracy. This comes at the expense of dealing with tasks with much lower arithmetic intensities than traditional dense computations. In fact, this thesis con-solidates the two trends of dense and data-sparse linear algebra for HPC. Not only does the thesis leverage recursive formulations for dense Cholesky-based matrix al- gorithms, but it also implements a novel TLR-Cholesky factorization using batched linear algebra operations to increase hardware occupancy and reduce the overhead of the API. Performance reported of the dense and TLR-Cholesky shows many-fold speedups against state-of-the-art implementations on various systems equipped with GPUs. Additionally, the TLR implementation gives the user flexibility to select the desired accuracy. This trade-off between performance and accuracy is, currently, a well-established leading trend in the convergence of the third and fourth paradigm, i.e., HPC and Big Data, when moving forward with exascale software roadmap.

It is well-known that phosphorus ingestion affects insulin sensitivity (Khattabet al., 2011). Evidence of insulin insensitivity has been previously observed in patients with hypophosphatemia (Defronzo and Lang, 1980). Indeed, phosphate plays an important role in insulin signaling and receptor affinity (Lizcano and Alessi, 2002). Phosphorus is also involved in the metabolism of fats. The enhanced lipogenesis (due to increased hepatic triglyceride production) and the reduced triglycerides clearance (due to inhibited activity of lipoprotein lipase activity) observed in hypertriglyceridemia of hypophosphatemia, were proposed to be the result of insulin resistance (Haglin, 2001). Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the acute effects of phosphorus supplementation on postprandial lipid responses in healthy adults. Eight healthy male subjects with normal BMI were recruited to participate in a randomized cross-over study. On each visit, overnight fasted subjects received a high fat meal [330 Kcal; Energy (percent): 69 fat, 28 CHO, 3 protein] and were randomly given 500 mg phosphorus, or 125 mg phosphorus or a placebo pill. Blood samples were collected at baseline (fasting), and after meal ingestion at 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, and 360 minutes. Serum total phosphate, inorganic phosphate, insulin, glucose, triglycerides, apo-B48, NEFA, HDL, LDL, total cholesterol, and plasma apo-B100 were measured. Results were observed as means ± standard error. Data was analyzed by ANOVA test. Higher concentrations of apo-B48 and triglycerides; reduced levels of apo-B100 were observed after the intake of the 500 mg P; but not the 125 mg P intake. However, none of these differences reached statistical significance. Insulin, NEFA, Total cholesterol, glucose, and HDL concentrations were minimally affected by phosphorus supplementation. These findings imply that there was a trend towards higher apo-B48 and TG response that was sustained for longer duration, and a decreased apo-B100 response after the supplementation with 50

Child’s rights are very important for promotion of growth and development and establishment of trustful and respectful relationship between children and their parent, family and community. Child's rights are part of human rights. Every person should know these rights; try to apply them and to protect the child's right during hospitalization. The main objectives are:•To evaluate nurses knowledge regarding child’s rights during hospitalization.•To identify nurses knowledge regarding child’s rights while they receiving nursing care.•To evaluate nurses knowledge regarding child’s rights in counselling.Method:A descriptive cross-sectional study in 50 nurses , conducted at Ribat University Hospital in Khartoum state from August 2014 to Febrauary2015. The data was collected using a questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS.Result:The main results are 36(72%) of the nurses are agreed that the child and parent must be convinced about discharge, 32(64%) of the nurses said that the child and parent have the right to know the quality of care that delivered by the nurse and (70%) of the nurses think that the child and parent have the right to refuse the treatment if they are not convinced. The study concluded that the most of the nurses had a good knowledge about child's right. The study recommended that periodic workshops about child's right should be established by professional pediatric nurses and application of educational posters in nurse’s office.
