The main factors in the design requirement of the water distribution network are ensuring the population consumption and water demand of the equipped area. The present study focuses on a multi-period simulation model of the network operation for variable water supply and demand conditions of Al-Hilla city through analyzing the robustness and vulnerability of the existing water distribution system by detecting changes and events under standard conditions on how a water distribution system operates under various scenarios. The main objectives of this study are designing and balancing of Water Distribution Network (WDN) based on loops hydraulically balanced method as well as with the contribution of Environmental Protection Agency Network (EPANET2). It is worth mentioning that the Hardy-Cross method is being used for approaching more precise optimized correction and consequences concerning hydraulically balanced and optimal WDN. This method can be applied to complex loops WDN as well; the advantage of the method is simple math and self-correction. Since this method is confirmed to be effective, simulations were done by using CAD and EPANET2 water distribution platform. The EPANET2 model was simulated for the case study area to analyze the present water distribution network, and then a design improvement was carried out on the existing network. As a result, hydraulically balanced WDN for the targeted area in Al-Hilla city was accomplished. Thus, positive results of the hydraulics state of parameters around the network were successfully determined.
The existing and the improved water distribution network could not serve the total area after the subsequent years due to population inflation and the increase in water demand. Thus, a new design of water distribution network is suggested to ensure the population consumption and water demand of the present area after 25 years from the base year of 2018. The data for the water pipe network, such as the maps, diameters, material, utilities, land ordinates, and the area supply method were obtained from Babylon Water Directorate. After representing the existing distribution system by drawing each district network in EPANET2 model and simulating the boundary parameters, the analysis option was applied for 35 districts of Al-Soub Al-Kabeer quarters of Al-Hilla city. After analyzing the model of district networks, some modifications were carried out on the water supply network of (Alemarat Alsekeniah, Alshawi, Almurtada, Altuhmazia, Alakrmyn, Nadir1, Nadir2, Alzahraa, Alaskari, Alkadhia, Alshuhada, Almuharibin, Alhussain, Alkaramih, and Altadamun) districts to improve its hydraulic parameters. The results of analysis for the suggested design of water distribution system for the year 2043 showed convergent values of the hydraulic parameters and within the acceptable limits for the whole districts.
