This study describes the synthesis of some glycerol derivatives, including the synthesis of some Schiff bases as starting materials to prepare heterocyclic compounds, new 1,3-oxazepin derivatives, new tetrazole derivatives, and the synthesis of heterocyclic complex compounds. This work can be summarized in seven parts as shown below:
Part 1: Esterification of glycerol to prepare triester (compound A) through a reaction of glycerol with p-amino benzoic acid using SOCl₂ as a catalyst, as shown in Scheme 1.
Part 2: Synthesis of Schiff base compounds (M1-M7) by reacting glycerol triester (compound A) with different aromatic aldehydes or ketones such as [4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, acetophenone, 4-nitrobenzaldehyde, salicylaldehyde, 3-aminobenzaldehyde, and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde] using glacial acetic acid as a catalyst, as shown in Scheme 2.
Part 3: Synthesis of new 1,3-oxazepin derivatives (S1-S3) through the reaction of the produced Schiff bases (M1, M4, and M5) with succinic anhydride, as shown in Scheme 3.
Part 4: Synthesis of new 1,3-oxazepin derivatives (K1 and K2) through the reaction of the produced Schiff bases (M5 and M6) with maleic anhydride, as shown in Scheme 4.
Part 5: Synthesis of new tetrazole derivatives (A1-A4) through the reaction of the produced Schiff bases (M1, M2, M4, and M5) with sodium azide, as shown in Scheme 5.
Part 6: Synthesis of new 1,3-oxazepin derivatives (P1-P5) through a reaction of the produced Schiff bases (M1, M3, M5, M6, and M7) with phthalic anhydride, as shown in Scheme 6.
The characterization of all the produced compounds was performed using TLC, FT-IR spectroscopy, and some of them with ¹H-NMR spectroscopy. The spectral data confirmed the formation of these compounds.
Part 7: Applications of this study involve the synthesis of new multi-metallic complexes by reacting the produced Schiff base compounds (M6) or heterocyclic compounds (S3, P3, and A4) with CuCl₂, as shown in Scheme 7.
