This study included 51 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia and/or chronic prostatitis who visited Al-Hilla Teaching Hospital - Department of Urology. Patients' age ranged from 1–99 years with a mean age of 30.9 years. It was found that 8% of them had benign prostatic hyperplasia, 0% had chronic prostatitis, and 8% had both benign prostatic hyperplasia and chronic prostatitis. The clinical features were frequency (98%), nocturia (91%), urgency (82%), hesitancy (50%), dysuria (50%), poor stream (3%), and dribbling of urine (22%). Other clinical features included pain (22%), such as suprapubic pain, lower backache, groin, and perineal pain. 21% of patients had post-voiding residual urine, while 1% had a history of catheterization, and cystoscopy was done for %. Results of general urine examination were pyuria (5%), RBCs (21%), bacteriuria (8%), and 2% had sterile pyuria with urine culture and sensitivity negative. Results of expressed prostatic secretion examination were pus cells (33.3%) and RBCs (2%). Regarding the results of urine cultures in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia and/or chronic prostatitis, 0% had positive cultures for bacteria. E. coli was the most common type of bacterial isolate (0%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (3%), Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus each represented %, Acinetobacter spp. (0%), Enterobacter spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa represented 2% each, and Proteus mirabilis (2%). In addition, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Corynebacterium spp., and Enterococcus spp. represented 0% each. As far as prostatic secretions cultures are concerned, 5.5% had positive results for bacteria. The most common isolates were Staphylococcus aureus (2%), Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, E. coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae represented 3% each. Enterobacter spp., Acinetobacter spp., and Corynebacterium spp. represented 0% each. The effect of some antibiotics on bacterial isolates showed that the isolates had a high rate of resistance to amoxicillin (0.8%), nalidixic acid (1.8%), gentamycin (31%), cephalexin (55%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (51.8%), while resistance to others was lower, such as doxycycline (1%), cefotaxime (2%), ciprofloxacin (2%), amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (8.5%) and amikacin (%). Zinc had an inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria, especially at concentrations more than 0.15 mg/mL of broth culture, in which there was more effect on Gram-negative bacteria than Gram-positive bacteria, and it increased the bactericidal effect of antibiotics. In addition, it affected the loss of the capsule of the bacteria. Some enzymes produced by bacterial isolates were also studied, and the results showed that all isolates of Enterobacteriaceae, Corynebacterium spp., S. aureus, and S. epidermidis, and one isolate of P. aeruginosa produced phosphatase enzyme, while none of Enterococcus spp., Acinetobacter spp., and S. saprophyticus produced this enzyme. On the other hand, the isolates that produced extracellular protease enzyme included E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and S. epidermidis. Also, one isolate of each of P. mirabilis, Acinetobacter spp., and Corynebacterium spp. produced this enzyme, while K. pneumoniae, Enterobacter spp., Enterococcus spp., and S. saprophyticus did not produce this enzyme.

Democratic backsliding is a gradual process that results from changes in formal political institutions and informal political practices that significantly affect how citizens engage with the state. Even though such a phenomenon may occur in different types of democracies, there is always a threshold that determines whether the state will completely backslide to autocracy or conserve being a “minimal democracy”. For instance, a current model of democratic backsliding is Turkey; a state which has been experiencing a decline in basic civil liberties, political rights and freedoms. According to Freedom House, from 2002 to 2020, Turkey’s “political environment” has decreased from 23 to 31 (on a scale of 0 to 40, 40 being the worst); moreover, its “global freedom” has deteriorated to 32 (on a scale of 100, 100 being the worst), which labeled it “not free”, compared to being “partly free” in 2002. Indeed, the literature indicates that such decline mostly stemmed from Erdoğan’s personalization of institutions and control of the military’s political power after the attempted coup of July 2016. Nevertheless, when examining the literature on democratization, studies reveal that undermining the political influence of the military is crucial to consolidate democracy, yet in the Turkish case that did not happen. Accordingly, an emerging puzzle is: why does a regime continue to backslide from democracy despite de-politicizing its military? How do other personalized institutions, within a state, determine the outcome of democratic transitions? Looking at Turkey under Erdoğan and the AKP, this thesis aims to examine the causes of democratic backsliding in relation to the de-politicization of the military.
