- Computer Assisted Audit Techniques (CAATs) have received considerable attention from researchers and international accounting agencies. The usage of these technologies has become an urgent necessity because of the difficulty of dealing with the large volume of data through traditional auditing methods, especially after increasing operation of electronic data withen business organizations. The results of most literature review indicated that the role and responsibilities of the internal audit function have been changed by the impact of the emergence of information technology. The results indicated that the usage of computer assisted audit techniques is at the infant stage and the majority of these techniques are simple. The results also indicated that electronic working papers, word processing programs and electronic spreadsheets were the most widely techniques used by internal auditors. This study aims at providing an empirical evidence of the usage of computer assisted audit techniques by the internal auditors in Syria. A structured interview, using a questionnaire developed by Hermanson et al.(2000), is used to achieve this study. The results of the study are consistent with the results that described above. The sample of study included the internal audit departments of Syrian organizations registered in Syrian Commission on Financial Markets and Securities in banking, insurance, telecommunications, and agriculture sectors. This study focuses on studying the differences of the usage of computer assisted audit techniques based on organizational charateristics (type of industry, level of automated information system, typical style of audit, type of data processing, presence of computer audit specialists). The results of this study indicate that good usage of auditing technology independent of these organizational charateristics
