Histological pattern of oesophageal tumours in Sudanese patients

الملخص

Oesophageal tumours are either benign or malignant. Benigntumours are mostly mesenchymal in origin. With rare exceptions,malignant oesophageal tumours arise from the epithelial layer.This is a retrospective study conducted in Sudanese patients at IbnSina hospital and NHL. The aim of the study is to determinehistopathological pattern, age and sex distribution of oesophagealtumours.The study comprised 102 patients of which 44 were males and 58were females with a male to female ratio of 1:1.3. The age of all patientsranged between 29 – 90 with a mean of 65 years.In this study no benign tumour was identified and all the cases weremalignant tumours the histology of which was SCC and adenocarcinoma.The SCC being predominant comprising 89.1 %, with a male to femaleratio of 1:1.6. There is striking male predominance in adenocarcinoma(10:1)By revising the slides: 85 were SCC (83 %) , 4 basoloid squamouscell carcinoma (4%), 2 spindle cell carcinoma (2 %), 9 adenocarcinoma(9%), 1 case papillary carcinoma (1 % ) , one case signet ring cellcarcinoma and 1 anaplastic carcinoma (1%).Invasive SCC represented the majority of cases (88%) while only12% were intraepithelial.In conclusion benign tumours and other tumours like carcinoid,lymphomas etc are rare. SCC is the most common oesophageal cancer inSudanese patients as it is the case worldwide. Intraepithelial neoplasia isunder diagnosed and this raises the importance of screening programs.
