Effect Of Neem Oil And Nerium Leaf Extracts On Termite, Microtermes Thoracalis (Sjost), Infestation On Wood Of Pine (Pinus Sp.)

الملخص

This study was carried out in the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum, Shambat, to evaluate the efficacy of neem (Azadirachta indica) and nerium (Nerium oleander) leaf extracts in comparison with neem oil and chlomight on termites. Pieces of wood of Pinus sp. measuring 2.54 x 2.54 x 12.5 cm and weighing 30.5 g, each, were used. Three concentrations (5%, 10% and 20%) of both neem and nerium leaf extracts were tested in comparison with neem seeds kernel oil 50%, chlomight 1% and the control. The wood pieces were dipped in the treatment materials. Each wood piece was vertically buried in the soil to a depth of 10 cm, so that about 2.5 cm remained above the soil surface. The wood pieces were spaced 25 cm apart and arranged in a completely randomized block design with four replicates. The results indicated that the neem and nerium leaf extracts were effective in reducing termites damage to the wood pieces. Nerium leaf extracts were more effective than the neem leaf extracts. Among the botanical extracts, the least weight loss (2.28%) was recorded on wood pieces treated with nerium leaf extract of 20% concentration, 2.38% was recorded on wood pieces treated with neem oil and 1.76% on wood pieces treated with chlomight 1%, 52 days after treatment. The highest weight loss (15.09%) was recorded, on untreated wood pieces, 52 days after treatment
