Assessment of Dental Students Motivation towards Head and Neck Anatomy Course in Relation to Academic performance, Karari University ,Sudan (2017)

الملخص

Academic performance is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals. Motivation to learn is ‘the willingness to attend and learn material in a development program’. This cross-sectional study was conducted with the aim of assessing dental students’ motivation towards head and neck anatomy course in relation to academic performance. This was achieved through identifying levels of different motivation components of dental students, gender variation in motivation, and correlation of each motivation domain level to academic performance. That was investigated through 70 dental students (24 male, 46 female) of Karary University, Khartoum State, Sudan were the subjects of this study, all of them were semester three, registered dental students, duration 2017, taking head and neck course and signed the informed consent. A modified version of the motivated strategies for learning self-administered questionnaire was filled. Data was coded, double entered and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 20. Descriptive statistics was computed, and then Pearson correlation was used in the analyses of the quantitative data. P-value of < 0.05 was considered to be considered significant. The result using Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated to determine the extent of linear relationship between the overall motivation score (dependent variable) and the performance of 2nd year dental students in end of year head and neck exam (independent variables). All the methods showed a positive, but weak and insignificant relationship of both. Motivation as a single factor affects the willingness of student to make more effort on a subject, but it cannot predict academic performance in isolation of learning strategies applied by students. Therefore, the recommendation of this study is that further studies in the field of motivational achievement of dental students to head and courses is recommended, with high sample size and with a link between motivation, IQ, and learning strategies
