الملخص

Ecological and Productivity Studies On the P The phytoplankton communities and the physico-chemical properties of the Blue and white Nile were studied over 28 months while one subsidiary tributary to the Nile (Khor Abu Anga) was sampled during its wet seasons only. The majority of the chemical factors analysed showed distinct seasonal variations and almost all of them were in higher concentrations in the White Nile. The chemistry of the water of the tributary approaches that of the White Nile.Seasonal phytoplankton variations have been correlated, as far as possible, with changes in their physico-chemical environments.Although the majority of the main components of the phytoplankton were common, but with varying densities to both Niles, certain algae favoured the White or Blue Nile. The periodicity of these common algae was not always identical in these two rivers. The floristic composition of the subsidiary tributary was, to all intents and purposes, similar to that of the two Niles although individuals preponderated in its water were of minor importance in the phytoplankton of the two rivers whereas the principal algae of the two rivers played an insignificant role in its flora.Total numbers of phytoplankton were greater in the Blue Nile, where diatoms formed the bulk of phytoplankton and blue green algae were the second major constituent while in the White Nile the reverse was true. In both rivers green algae formed the third major group although the number of its species and genera outnumbered those from each of the other two groups.Melosira granulata and M. granulata var. angustissima were the main plants responsible for the preponderance of Bacillus iophyceae in both Niles. In addition, M. distans and at certain occasions synedra spp. abounded in the Blue Nile. The bulk of Cynophyceae in both rivers was due to Anabaena flos-aquae var. inetmedia f. spiroides but Microcystic flos-aquae preponderated in the Blue Nile.Several algae were recorded for the first time in these rivers, e.g. Melosira distans and Attheya zachariasi.Euglenophyta was not encountered at all in the White Nile and was sparsely represented in the Blue Nile. The bulk of phytoplankton in the tributary was due to this phylum.Dinophyceae and Chrysophyceae were sparsely represented in the phytoplankton of the Blue Nile. A few species of xanthophycean algae were observed in the two rivers but not in the tributary. The Main Nile was sampled for about one year but no proper mixing of the Blue and White Nile was observed to take place at the appointed sampling station. The primary productivity of the two Niles was also measured for about 14 months. Comparative analysis of the productivity in the two rivers was presented.Correlation between productivity and total phytoplankton in either of the two rivers was also made.hytoplankton of the Blue and White Nile at Khartoum
