الملخص

This study was initiated to update information and data of El-Rawakeeb dryarea and to assess land degradation using some biophysical indicators.Soil samples were collected by an augor and subjected to laboratory andstatistical analysis; samples of water from a bore hole were also analyzed.Interpretation of physical, chemical and field information indicated thepresence of land degradation.Results showed an increase in pH and SAR for the cultivated soil thanuncultivated soil . Sand encroachment formulated sand dunes that expandedin the area of the scheme (length and height of 107m; 3.6m).The results showed that soil texture follow the order sand (66%), silt (14%),clay (20%) and the organic matter is low with overall standard deviation of6.56 and variation of 39.7. The distribution of soluble cations and solubleanions, showed irregular pattern, although there were no clear differencesamong different sites and depths, magnesium, calcium and chloride weredominant in the soil of the area.The results also indicated that, the soil was not saline and the irrigationwater is slightly saline; (EC< 4dS/ m) for the soil.This deterioration can be controlled if some modern land managementsystem is applied and sand dune fixation ,wind break and shelter belttechniques are adopted .
