The Influence of Teaching English Culture on Algerian Students’ Attitudes: The Case of Third Year Students, at the Department of English, University 8 Mai 1945, Guelma

الملخص

The present study aims at investigating the influence of teaching English culture on Algerianstudents' attitudes as well as identifying teachers' practices and techniques that enhancestudents' interest in the English culture. The study carried out a survey of two questionnairesat Guelma University to confirm the hypothesis which stated that culture integration inforeign language class may increase students' interest and acceptance in foreign language.Therefore, the first questionnaire was administered for the university teachers of English toraise their awareness about the importance of teaching culture in foreign language teachingand their useful techniques to teach the cultural aspects. The second questionnaire wasdirected to third year students at the same university. The study reported that foreign languageteachers are aware about the importance of culture teaching, they also used differenttechniques to convey cultural aspects of the target language. Moreover, students showed greatinterest in incorporating English culture through various techniques to present the targetfeatures in their class. In the light of these finding, the present study recommends theintegration the target culture in foreign language teaching context.
