Development of Electrospun Membranes Based on PVDF-HFP Modified by Nanosized Zeolite

جامعة خليفة · الامارات

Current methods to treat wastewater like produced water and refinery effluents before discharging are unable to keep up with the ever increasing stringent regulations of discharge and reuse. Membrane distillation (MD) is an emerging membrane technology that can be used to overcome this challenge. MD is particularly attractive because it can remove oil and salt from such wastewaters in one step, producing freshwater. However, pore clogging and wetting by low surface tension contaminants limit the use of MD for oily wastewater treatment. To overcome this challenge, a dual-layered membrane, consisting of an underwater superoleophobic top layer of electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) coated with regenerated cellulose (RC) and a hydrophobic bottom layer of electrospun PVDF-HFP was developed before [1]. The membrane was successful in desalinating oily wastewater through direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). While the membrane maintained complete salt and oil rejection in DCMD, its permeate flux was relatively low. In this work, the performance of the dual-layered membrane in terms of permeate flux was enhanced by incorporating different concentrations of Linde type L (LTL) zeolite nanoparticles into the top membrane layer via cellulose surface coating. The results showed that the MD performance was optimized when 1 wt% of nanoparticles was embedded in the cellulose coating. The composite membrane with 1 wt% zeolite loading maintained a flux 38% higher than that of the dual-layered membrane without zeolite in oily saline water desalination. This is attributed to the increase in top layer porosity from 41.59% to 49.71% induced by the addition of 1 wt% of LTL nanoparticles. The results from this study suggest that the incorporation of LTL zeolite nanoparticles into the cellulose coating can effectively enhance the membrane performance without compromising the oil and salt rejection in DCMD.

كلية الآداب واللغات-جامعة الشهيد حمة لخضر - الوادي · الجزائر

This study examines the language use in Chinua Achebe's "Arrow of God" and how Achebe used adaptively two languages in one literary work. This study analyzes the different materials that enriched the message of Achebe to the world. The objective of this research is to identify the reasons behind using bilingual language in the novel; Igbo language which is Achebe's native language, and English language which represents the colonial mother tongue. Hence, Achebe inserts the African Oral Tradition to enhance Igbo language by contextualizing creatively proverbs, folktales, myths, and lexicon items in his novel. These devices play an important role and give a value for African society, identity, language, and traditions. In one hand, African Oral Traditions give his work aesthetic meaning. On the other hand, they give the African society a voice over the world. And that's what makes readers consider Achebe's works as a reference to the Igbo language. Moreover, he used English language in his novel to strengthen his social identity to the worldview. Through some characters Achebe uses English addressing the colonial by their mother tongue. The post-colonial theory is applied in this study to demonstrate the identity of the African society during the colonial period, and shows the struggle between the African and the European culture. Using the descriptive qualitative method also helps in the analysis of the context of the novel. The findings of this study shows that Achebe succeeded to portray the image of Africans and specifically the Nigerian culture and traditions. Also, through the skillful use of language he sheds the light on the importance of language for cultural reinforcement. The unique style of Achebe's writing gives his work a flavor to be read over the world. And for the African culture to be well known.

Feminism in Britain: From William Shakespeare to Mary Wollstonecraft

كلية الاداب واللغات-جامعة مولود معمري - تيزي وزو · الجزائر

This thesis entitled Feminism in Britain: From William Shakespeare to MaryWollstonecraft falls within the category of research on gender studies or feministscholarship. It sheds light on the origin and evolution of Liberal feminism and itscontradictions during the period stretching from the Renaissance to theEnlightenment. It focuses on the shift of paradigms of thoughts and discourse aboutthe place of gender in the public sphere. The humanist episteme promoted the spreadof the feminist discourse because of the very contradictions inherent to the liberalideology. In an attempt to prove that British feminism evolved from a sympatheticattitude reflected in the writings of the Renaissance to a defensive type during theGlorious Revolution to reach towards the end of the eighteenth century an offensivephase with Mary Wollstonecraft who broke into the public sphere and entered afierce debate with many of her contemporary philosophers and writers, I selected sixauthors, three male, William Shakespeare, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, andthree female, Mary Astell, Mary Wollstonecraft and Susanna Haswell Rowson asrepresentative authors. The thesis is divided into three main parts, with threechapters each. Part One “Shakespeare’s England and Women” discusses how the genderissue emerged in Shakespeare’s time. Chapter One “Women in Shakespeare’s England:Humanism and Reformation Influences” considers the status of women in Shakespeare’sEngland. Chapter Two “Shakespeare, Patriarchal Bard or Feminist Sympathiser?” viewsShakespeare as a patriarchal Renaissance man who sympathises with women. Chapter Three“Shakespeare, Empire and the Tuning of Feminist Sympathies According to the Ethnicities ofEmpire” deals with the impact empire had on the emergence of feminist sympathies inShakespeare’s time. Part Two “Hobbes, Locke, and Mary Astell: Dialogue andPolemics” considers the dialogue and polemics between Thomas Hobbes, John Lockeand Mary Astell with regard to the gender issue. Chapter Four “An Overview of theRevolutionary Ideas of the Enlightenment” is devoted to the historical andintellectual background behind the birth of the stated dialogue and polemics. ChapterFive “Thomas Hobbes’s Leviathan and John Locke’s Second Treatise onGovernment: Theoretical Foundations of the ‘Myth of the State’” analyses themanner Hobbes and Locke for the first time in modern European intellectual historytheorised differently about the separation of the public from the private realm.Chapter Six “Mary Astell’s Some Reflections upon Marriage: a Feminist Reading ofLocke’s Hypothesis” considers Astell as the first liberal feminist to stand against thebourgeois man’s confinement of women in that bourgeois conjugal family’s internalspace without access to the economic, the political, or cultural spheres of the privaterealm. Part Three “Nationalism, Cosmopolitanism and Gender in Eighteenth CenturyEngland” argues for the evolutions within British feminism in the eighteenth century.Chapter Seven “Gender, Nationalism, and the French Revolution: Mary Wollstonecraft vs.Male and Female Writers” is devoted to an analysis of anthologized essays from TheTatler and The Spectator to show how these early eighteenth-century periodicalsinstituted the cultural and social norms of Enlightenment Britain and beyond. ChapterEight “Mary Wollstonecraft: Dialogue on the Political Rights of Women” analyses theworks of Wollstonecraft to illustrate how the expanding world of letters constitutiveof the bourgeois public sphere of civil society was intruded into by her works due tothe political radicalism unleashed by the French and American revolutions. ChapterNine “Mary Wollstonecraft’s and Susanna Rowson’s Liberal Feminism and Orientalism”considers the contradictions of the liberal feminism of Wollstonecraft and Rowson, who re-tooled orientalism in defence of women’s rights.

كلية الهندسة-جامعة كربلاء · العراق

The development and a improve efficiency of water purification plant in Kerbala was investigated.Research mechanisms were established to improve the efficiency of the station production in terms of quality and quantity to meet the standard requirements to be developed within locally and accepted alternatives. The study has addressed theoretical analysis and a series of previous tests results through data available at the station from 2014-2019. The model was built and integrated matching the conventional water treatment plant using four values of flow rate (0.475,0.712,0.95,1.18 m3 /hr) using different turbidities. This model consists of basic units coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation . By using a dynamic similarity application between the model and prototype , the Froude number must be the same for both model and prototype .The bentonite soil as well as river soil were used for preparing the required turbidity. A high-rate sedimentation unit was considered in a pilot plant using plates settler and compared with the conventional. Dual media filter with anthracite was added as well as a single filtration unit that existing in plant, with same dimensions, where the layer deep was (0.7 m) divided to (0.35m) sand and (0.35m) anthracite. The activated carbon filters were linked after the single filter media and the other one after the dual filter media. Best velocity gradient in rapid mixing tank is (G_rapid ) ≥750 s̄1 and in flocculation basin is 15 s ̄ ¹ < G_flocc < 60 s̄¹ and values of (〖Gt〗_flocc) = [(104) -(15*104)]. The best efficiencies of removal in sedimentation basin with plate settler were 94.07% and 72.07 % using bentonite and river soil respectively. The enhancement in removal efficiency is about 23% when using bentonite. When using river soil, The best removal efficiencies in sedimentation basin were 74.02% and 66.28% with and without using inclined plate settler respectively. The enhancement in removal efficiency was about 11% when using plate settler. The efficiency of removal using inclined plates was best especially when doubling the flow rate (1.5-2.5) times. The best conditions when flow rate = 2100 m³/hr, turbidity at 50 NTU, using river soil, with inclined plate settler, dual filter media and activated carbon filter where the efficiency of removal was 98.23%, while the efficiency of removal using bentonite ,without using inclined plates ,using activated carbon filter and dual filter media at turbidity 200 NTU ,flow rate1050m3/hr, it was 99.27%.This indicate ,when using bentonite for Increasing water turbidity has a positive impact in removal efficiency. In conclusion, a significant increase of (150% -250%) in the production of station, efficiency and moderate economic cost.

كلية العلوم الصحية والحيوية-جامعة حمد بن خليفة · قطر

There are few reports describing proximal deletions of the short arm of chromosome 20 (20p), making it difficult to predict the likely consequences of this deletion. Previously, two reports have described a mosaic maternally inherited 20p deletion; the first case has described a proximal 20p11.2 deletion mainly associated with phenotypes such as panhypopituitarism and dysmorphic facial features. The second case has reported Alagille syndrome with a submicroscopic 20p deletion (including the JAG1 gene).Another report describing a de novo 20p11.22-p11.23 haploinsufficiency, have described a phenotype of autism, craniofacial dysmorphism, and Hirschsprung disease. Herein, we report the smallest reported de novo proximal 20p deletion in 9-years old boy with a phenotype including; growth hormone deficiency, hypothyroidism, craniofacial dysmorphism, ocular abnormalities, ectopic inguinal testes, polysplenia, gastrointestinal system anomalies and immune system impairment. The only other similar report to our patient involving the deletion of only Foxa2 gene showed phenotypes associated with biliary atresia, malrotation and interrupted inferior vena cava. Our patient provides further evidence expanding the spectrum of 20p11.2 deletion to include hypothyroidism and growth hormone deficiency.
