Pressure Drop in a Network of Pipelines Using Machine Learning Models

Deniz Refaat Alakoum, Kassem Ghorayeb

كلية مارون سمعان للهندسة والعمارة-الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت · لبنان

Field development planning aims to produce hydrocarbon accumulations while minimizing costs and maximizing revenues. Facility placement and pipeline layout development and optimization plays an important role in a field development planning process. Pressure drop is a significant parameter used to evaluate the different scenarios for well and facility placement optimization. Optimization employs a large number of simulations each including pressure drop estimation through a production network. Therefore, the process of estimating the pressure drop through the pipelines takes place numerous times and hence the need of an efficient algorithm that automatically builds and solves the surface network. To address this challenge, we proposed a modular approach to build machine learning models with a real world application using synthetic data generated from PIPESIM simulator. The modular approach allows us to build various ML models with different features and ranges to address different cases. Then we integrated the developed ML models into a network solver to solve for pressure drop through a single pipeline or a network of pipelines. The ML network solver was built in a flexible way where ML models can be easily added as much as required. The ML network solver was able to solve a set of networks generated by OGED Field development Planning interface. We have developed eight ML models to cover the length and inclination ranges in the networks. The results for pressure drop, component flowrates, and pressure at inlet nodes of the pipelines were promising where the maximum error among all the networks was 8.79%. However, the processing time was not efficient compared to PIPESIM simulator run in a batch mode. Although PIPESIM simulator performed better in terms of processing time compared to the ML network solver, the PIPESIM simulator processing time remained high. To accelerate the process of modelling and solving a pipeline or a network, we introduced upscaling. The upscaling algorithm was applied on the same networks addressed earlier. The processing time decreased when using both the PIPESIM simulator and the ML Network Solver. The ML network solver results were also promising where the maximum error was 10.88% although its speed remained inferior to PIPESIM simulator. Machine learning techniques are recently used to predict pressure drop in pipelines only. However, to the best of our knowledge, they are not yet addressed in such amodular approach and applied for pressure drop evaluation through networks. Our approach is an innovative way to address different real world scenarios. Once successfully integrated with optimization algorithms for facility placement optimization, the proposed work will be a valuable addition to the oil and gas industry.

Solar Spectral Splitting for Parallel Multijunction Photovoltaics

Ahmed Zayan, Marco Stefancich

جامعة خليفة · الامارات

Solar power presents itself as one of the strongest candidates available for renewable energy power generation. Photovoltaic panels in particular have high efficiencies and low manufacturing costs when compared to its peers; it falls short however, when compared to today's commonly used fossil fuels in both fronts, making the transition to clean, green energy a very rocky one. This thesis addresses some novel methods to improve the efficiency of commercially available photovoltaic panels, with a particular focus on spectral splitting. Spectral Splitting is a term used throughout this study, which refers to splitting the light into its respective spectra via the use of a dispersive optical element (eg prism), or spectral filters to disperse – or ‘split' – the incident light into the wavelengths comprising it on a target receiver, made up of photovoltaic cells. The choice of cells and their arrangement depends on material parameters such as the bandgap (Eg), and external quantum efficiency (EQE) to maximize the power output from the system. Simulations depicting the performance of the chosen solar cells under different spectral conditions were carried out, and their results posted to further augment the validity of the spectral splitting approach. Concentration is also a parameter of interest in our analysis, as it has been established that an increase in the light incident on a cell increases its exciton generation, which in turn improves its efficiency. Two main concentrator setups are considered, the first is a double component concentrator/splitter element based on Masdar City's 100 kWth Beam Down Facility, where the concentration and splitting of the incident light is carried out in two discrete steps. The second is a single component concentrator/splitter element, capable of splitting and concentrating the light propagating through it to producing a continuous band of wavelengths on the receiver. A comparison of the two aforementioned ideas is carried out, with particular focus on the difference in optical losses between both. Finally, a brief section on minor improvements that can be used to enhance the efficiency of currently established concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) technology is discussed with some preliminary results showing the advantages of such novel methodologies.

Assessment of Curtain Grouting Used in the Foundation Treatment at Dam Complex of Upper Atbara River

Eltayeb Hassan Onsa, Mujab Abdelgani Shakartallah A. Elgadir

كلية الدراسات العليا-جامعة السودان للعلوم والتكنولوجيا · السودان

Curtain Grouting (CG) is aprocedure mainly used to control water seepage in dams by sealing off fissures or joints in bedrock, granular soil pockets and minor cavities; hence CG can be considered as foundation improvement method. This process involves grouting a line, or several lines, of holes in sequence along the water cut-off zone and requires specialized instrumentation to monitor grout pressure and flow parameters.Geological and geotechnical properties of the rock and soil to be grouted are important parameters influencing the design of the curtain grouting. The Dams Implementation Unit (DIU) at the Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity (MWRIE) was responsible for the implementation of Dam Complex of Upper Atbara Project (DCUAP). This dam complex comprises two dams namely: Rumela Dam and Burdana Dam on Upper Atbara and Setit Rivers in the eastern Sudan. The purpose of this study is to review and assess the design of the grout curtain which was used to treat the foundation properties at the different sections along the dam axis.In this study, general description of curtain grouting design in DCUAP is made. The materials used in grouting and the grouting pressures values are presented. The general procedure, equipment used and methodology of curtain grouting construction in the DCUAP are presented, as well as the tests used in the quality control of grouting works.Curtain grouting is applied in 14 sections along the Rumela and Burdana dams. In this study 300 meters section at Right Bank of Burdana dam (Chainage 1+600 to 1+900) has been selected for assessment. The grouting works in the selected section had been studied and the grout results had been analyzed to determine the quality of grouting worksregarding achievement the desired goals in terms of reducing permeability in the foundation of the dams. As well as quantifying the amount of the solid matters of curtain grouting used in the grouting process in that section and then comparing it with the quantities indicated in the project's bill of quantities. The analysis of the selected section data concluded that the permeability was improved by about 85% from the original value. The estimated amount of grout given solid material in the design documents (Bill of Quantities) is found to be much higher compared to the real grout absorption in the site which was less than the contract amount by more than 18 times. This result clarifies the importance of post project assessment studies, like this study, in the properestimation of CG materialtypes and quantities for future damprojects.
