An Application of Fuzzy Logic in Urban Traffic Incident Detection

Feda Wasfi Fayez Mustafa,

Traffic congestion in urban areas is an increasing problem around the world. Traffic incidents (such as accidents) are considered as the major source of traffic congestion. Traffic incidents have negative impacts on traffic flow, air pollution and fuel consumption. As a result, increasing interest in finding new techniques to deal with this issue has been shown. Traffic incident-management systems can decrease the effect of such events and keep roads capacity as close as possible to normal levels. Incident detection system is an important part of any incident management system. This thesis proposes a new approach to incident detection in urban traffic networks using fuzzy logic theory with the objective of reducing traffic delays and increasing road safety. The proposed detection system can be then integrated with a traffic incident management system to reduce traffic congestion related to non-recurrent incident situations. A methodology has been established based on fuzzy logic for detecting incident status in urban areas using detector accumulative count differences. Three fuzzy models were developed and evaluated using simulated data (generated using the commercial software: PTV VISSIM by PTV Group). The fuzzy models can detect incident status on a regular basis (every minute). Performance measures were introduced to capture the capabilities of the suggested models in detecting incidents. The dissertation concludes with a summary of the major findings, recommendations and future research.

Effects of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes on gene and protein expression in Sinoatrial node of rat heart

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine disorders and its global prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate. Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality among diabetic patients. In addition to defects in contraction, the diabetic heart also frequently suffers from disturbances to the electrical conduction system. This study investigates the effects of diabetes on the sinoatrial node (SAN) of the rat heart. Previous in vivo and in vitro experiments have demonstrated reduced heart rate, longer SAN action potential duration, prolonged pacemaker cycle length and Sino-atrial conduction time in streptozotocin (STZ) - induced diabetic rat heart. Thus it is of paramount importance to identify the molecular basis of electrical disturbances in SAN of diabetic heart. The hypothesis is that alterations in mRNA encoding various proteins associated with the generation and transmission of electrical signals in the heart may be responsible for the functional disturbances in the SAN of diabetic heart. Experiments were performed in male Wistar rats 10-12 weeks of age after STZ treatment with a single intraperitoneal injection (60 mg/kg body weight). Heart rate was measured in isolated perfused heart with an extracellular suction electrode. Expression of mRNA encoding a variety of cardiac proteins, involved in electrical transmission, were measured in SAN and right atrial biopsies using real time reverse transcription polymerase reaction technique. Expression of proteins in SAN biopsies was measured using sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacramide gel electrophoresis and Western blotting technique. Ultrastructure of the STZ-SAN was studied using transmission electron microscopy. The heart rate was significantly lower in STZ compared to controls. Of the 85 genes studied, there were some changes of particular interest. These include an increase in the expression of Gja7 (connexin), Cacna1g , Cacna1h , Cacnb3 (calcium channel), Nppa , Nppb (natriuretic peptide) Kcnj5 and Kcnk3 (potassium channel), in STZSAN. There was also decrease in the expression of Scn7a (sodium channel), Kcna2 (potassium channel), a 6-fold decrease in Kcnd2 and a 7-fold decrease in Cacng4 . Some of the proteins encoded by these genes showed similar changes in expression including Ryr3, Cav3.1 and Kv4.2 while others like Pro-ANP and BNP did not. The ultrastructure of STZ-SAN had reduced mitochondria. These changes in gene and protein expression may contribute to the electrophysiological disturbances seen in the diabetic SAN. Further studies will be required to investigate whether these changes in mRNA and protein translate into changes in electrophysiological function.

An AI Enabled Diagnostic Systems for Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes

Noncommunicable diseases (NCD), or chronic diseases which include diabetes, cancer, respiratory disorders, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cancer etc., can be difficult to fully recover from and they are responsible for 71% of worldwide deaths. The NCDs may stem from a combination of lifestyle, genetics, and environmental factors. In this dissertation, we focused on developing AI-enabled methods using multi-modal dataset to diagnose two most prevalent NCDs in Qatar: CVD and diabetes. For this purpose, we actively collaborate with Qatar Biobank (QBB) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) at Qatar. In the first study, we investigated lifestyle related risk factors for CVD patients in Qatar by analyzing their food, drink, smoking, and physical activity habits. Statistical analysis revealed that the CVD group consumed less fast food, soft drinks, snacks, and meat than the control group. However, smoking rates were higher among the CVD group, and their consumption of healthy breakfast items was lower. Our findings suggest that the Qatari CVD cohort mostly follows standard guidelines but should reduce smoking and adjust moderate physical activity based on physician recommendations. Second, we developed an AI-enabled method that can detect CVD onset with 93% accuracy by integrating a multimodal clinical dataset from QBB. This study included the largest collection of biomedical measurements representing anthropometric measurements, clinical biomarkers, bioimpedance, spirometry, VICORDER readings, and behavioral factors of the CVD group from QBB. Our analysis revealed that physio-clinical and bioimpedance measurements were the most effective in distinguishing these two groups. Moreover, we confirmed known CVD risk factors and proposed potential novel risk factors linked to CVD-related comorbidities such as renal disorder, atherosclerosis, hypercoagulable state, and liver function. Proposed method outperformed the clinically approved scales such as the Framingham scale and ASCVD scale that used in clinical settings for CVD diagnosis plans. Third, we developed a novel, fast, and non-invasive method for CVD diagnosis based on retinal images and Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scans. Retinal images provide quick diagnosis of CVD by measuring the diameter and tortuosity of retinal blood vessels. DXA, recently FDA-approved for CVD diagnosis, can measures bone health of patients. Our AI-enabled system fuses information from both sources to diagnose CVD, achieving 78.3% accuracy. Using gradient class activation map, we showed that the model focuses on hemorrhages, a sign of CVD, in the center of retinal images. Moreover, DXA data showed better bone health condition in the CVD group. Finally, We proposed DiaNet, a deep learning model to predict diabetes from retinal images with over 90% accuracy based on the retinal images collected from QBB and HMC. The model identifies relevant regions on the retina images and highlights the distinguishing capability of retinal images for diabetes patients in multiple cohort. Overall, we concluded that, compared to traditionally used clinical data, retinal images contain sufficient information to distinguish diabetes cohort from the control group with high accuracy suggesting their inclusion in clinical diagnosis setup is warranted in the future. Currently we are working on the implementation of the proposed DiaNet system at HMC.

Game body vs. lived body: a phenomenological reading of motion based video games

Maryam Mustapha Ghaddar, Hatim El-Hibri

This thesis seeks to analyze how video games are modes of technological embodiment and sensual identity. What is the point of intersection between the games’ objectives and how they engage visuality and the senses? Video games, particularly those of a motion based nature, and the human experience of playing and physically performing the part, are juxtaposed to allow for a contextualized critical framework about the medium. The study underlines Vivian Sobchack’s media phenomenology as a theoretical framework and emphasizes two very particular video games which express sensual stimulation and make demands of human experience: 1) Just Dance and 2) Food Network’s Cook or Be Cooked. Exploring and theorizing video games in this way places the body at the forefront of analysis, in subjective terms; understanding gaming worlds as more than moving images and settings designed for a spectator, but rather as ones controlled and consumed by moving beings is essential in evaluating them phenomenologically. In Chapter 1, I introduce Vivian Sobchack’s concepts of the human interaction with technology and put her into intense dialogue with Alexander Galloway over his axis of algorithmic cultural objects, with Ian Bogost’s critical approach and definition of game formats in general, and with Jesper Juul’s analysis of the mimetic interface of video games, particularly those displayed in the Nintendo Wii game console. In Chapters 2 and 3, I reflect and expand on the concepts of perception, virtual performance, and affective response in Just Dance and Cook or Be Cooked respectively. In a way, we are both controlled and in control of the technology, and locating that junction requires some unambiguous critical analysis. Finally, I conclude with a discussion on the limitations of electronic sensory modalities and suggest further opportunities for motion-based video game research and the impending prospect of simulated reality.
