Traffic classification is the process of associating network traffic with the application or group of applications that generated it. It is an essential part of network management at datacentres and network operators due to its importance in traffic shaping, bandwidth allocation, and cybersecurity. Several techniques were investigated by researchers to classify traffic accurately with methods based on machine learning achieving encouraging results. In this work, we conduct several experiments using naïve Bayes, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbour, and random forest trees on two traffic datasets which are both publicly available. While the first dataset was collected in an uncontrolled environment that resembles real network behavior, the second was captured using a highly controlled environment. In the experiments conducted in this work, we look at the classifiers’ performance and their effect on the classification accuracy and F-score. We also assess the suitability of extracted features using feature selection techniques. Moreover, we determine the optimal percentage of packets within a flow that need to be considered while extracting flow-level features. It is observed that when a larger number of packets is considered, the classification performance improves, but the required processing delay increases. Thus, we argue that 60% of packets in a flow would be a good compromise that ensures high performance in the least possible time. Several graphs are generated during each experiment to investigate the effect of varying each parameter on the classification performance. The results of our experiments indicate that random forest outperforms all other algorithms achieving a maximum accuracy of 98.5% and an F-score of 0.932. Finally, since software-based classifiers are usually slow and hence incapable of coping with the increasing amount of traffic within congested networks, we implement a highly pipelined random forest classifier on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The implementation makes use of the parallel architecture of the FPGA in accelerating such a time-consuming task. The implemented design is capable of achieving an average throughput of 163.24 Gbps which is more than twice the maximum throughput compared to reported work. This enables datacentres to achieve efficient online traffic classification given the dynamic nature of modern networks.

The outcropped Upper Triassic carbonates in Wadi Sha'am, Ras Al Khaimah, have been subjected to pervasive dolomitization and dolomite cementation, which occur along and in the vicinity of faults and associated fractures. Field observations, petrographic, stable and strontium isotope analyses have been combined to constrain the timing of dolomitization episode(s), as well as the origin and evolution of dolomitizing fluids. Associated with fracturing and brecciation, saddle dolomite and host dolostones have similar δ 13CVPDB (+0.52‰ to +1.78‰ and +0.21‰ to +1.78‰, respectively) and δ18OVPDB (-9.98‰ to -8.03‰ and -9.40‰ to -5.30‰, respectively) stable isotope data and high strontium isotope ratios (0.708858 to 0.708864 and 0.709256, respectively). The precipitation of saddle dolomite was followed by the precipitation of coarse-crystalline equant calcite (δ 13CVPDB = -1.03‰ to +0.38‰, δ 18OVPDB = -7.10‰ to -4.68‰) and minor amounts of prismatic quartz. Two regional orogenic events (i.e. the obduction of Oman-UAE ophiolites and the Cenozoic thrusting phase) make it possible for hot basinal brines (referred to as hydrothermal fluids in literature) to flow through active faults and fractures. Assuming that saddle dolomite and equant calcite were precipitated from evolved basinal brines with calculated δ 18OSMOW more than +2‰, the estimated temperatures (91°C to 107°C for saddle dolomite and 49°C to 64°C for calcite) indicate a cooling phase, which was probably related to obduction of Oman ophiolites. Calcite cement filling fractures that cut across the dolostones and saddle dolomite have low δ13CVPDB (-10.81‰ to -8.43‰) and δ18OVPDB (-11.93‰ to -11.80‰) isotope values and low strontium isotope ratio (0.708393), indicating the involvement of meteoric water during the uplift and erosion phase. This study thus elucidates the influence of regional tectonic history and related basinal fluids on the diagenetic evolution of carbonate succession. The formation of large vugs might have been caused by the under-saturation of hot basinal brines in terms of calcite. Low porosity in the dolostones should be attributed to the extensive carbonate cementation.

The use of reverse engineering (RE) is increasingly spreading and becoming one of the essential engineering trends for software evolution and maintenance. RE is used to support the process of analyzing and recapturing the design information in legacy systems or complex systems during the maintenance phase. The major problem stakeholders might face in understanding the architecture of existing software systems is that the knowledge of software architecture information is difficult to obtain because of the size of the system, and the existing architecture document often missing or does not match the current implementation of the source code of software system. Therefore, much more effort and time are needed from multiple stakeholders such as developers, maintainers and architects for obtaining and re-documenting and visualizing the architecture of a target system from its source code files. Hence, most of the current work is mainly focused on the developer’s viewpoint. To contribute in solving the mentioned problems for obtaining and re-documenting the architecture of target system; this research presents a RE methodology for visualizing architectural information for multiple stakeholders and viewpoints by applying a reverse engineering process on specific parts of the source code. The process is driven by eliciting stakeholders' concerns on specific architectural viewpoints to obtain and visualize the architectural information related to these concerns. In this research the proposed RE methodology’s phases have been illustrated and validated using a case study of a legacy web application system. The main contributions of this research are three folds: firstly; the RE methodology is based on IEEE1471 standard forarchitectural description and supports concerns of stakeholder including the end-user and maintainer; secondly; it supports the visualization of a particular part of the target system by providing a visual model of the architectural representation which highlights the main components needed to execute specific functionality of the target systemand finally; the methodology also uses architecture styles to organize the visual architecture information, this architectural representation helps stakeholders to inspect the dependencies of the different parts of the architecture obtained from specific source code segments of the target system.
