Gender Disparities in Secondary Education in Sudan: An Empirical Analysis for the Case of Gezira State (2002- 2013)

الملخص

Gender equality means that girls have equal learning opportunities with their male counterparts. This research aims to calculating the degree of inequality in the distribution of education opportunities in secondary education level, the case of Gezira State. To achieve the objectives of the research, time series data during the period (2002 – 2013) were collected from official source represented in the Ministry of Education in Gezira state. The research adopted the descriptive analytical method, and the Gini Coefficient is used to estimate the degrees of inequality in the distribution of education opportunities. In addition to that, the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method is used to find out whether the degree of inequality in secondary education is increasing, decreasing, or constant over time. The results reveal that the existence of obvious degrees of inequality between males and females in secondary education enrollment rates in the all seven localities of Gezira State. However, the degrees of inequality in the distribution of secondary education opportunities are found to be decreasing over time. The main recommendations of the research include improving the school environment and buildings, encouraging female education and removal of all barriers that hinder female education, and addressing the causes of drop out from the primary to secondary level.
