- This thesis is composed of an introduction, six chapters and a conclusion and prospects. In the first chapter, we present the physical motivation and the mathematical equations of the problem of the guided wave spropagation in optical fibers. The guided waves (see [26, 27]), correspond to the harmonic solutions of Maxwell's equations in time and in the longitudinal variable of space. The guided modes, likely to be propagated in optical fibers, are the non trivial solutions of Maxwell's equations on the form: E,H(𝑥1,𝑥2)𝑒(𝑖𝑘𝑐0𝑡−𝛽𝑥3)such that𝛽,k∈ℝand E,H𝐿2ℝ23.The unknown factors are :E the electric fields, H the magnetic fields and 𝛽the propagation constant. kis the frequency, which is a data. c0is the speed of the light in the vacuum. The mathematical problem of the research of the guided modes is thus posed in all the ℝ 2plan (see [3, 13]), which is a unbounded domain. The question which arises then is: if one wants to use a finite elements method to compute these modes,it is necessary to be brought back to a bounded domain. The question of the choice of the boundary condition arises then on the boundary of this domain. In the second chapter, one shows formally that, when the number of wave is “large” and the variation of the refraction index is “too small” (case of weak guidance),the problem of the research of the modes guided to be propagated in an optical fiber is a scalar problem.Under the assumptions of“weak guidance”, one proposes in the third chapter,a formulation of the problem in a bounded domain, by introducing a condition of the Robin type on the boundary. It is shown that the solutions of the problem arising in a bounded domain have the same characteristics as those of the original problem, such as monotony and finitude (see [14]). Lastly, one proposes a method based on finite elements able to calculate all the modes the some either geometry of fiberand the some or index of refraction checking the assumptions of propagation. In the fourth chapter, one studies the error due to the truncation of the domain(see [10]). It is shown that the error due the truncation of the domain decrease exponentially according to the ray of the field. In the fifth chapter, one presents a method of calculation of the guide dmodes in optical couplers in the scalar case (with jump of index). This method is based on the integral representation of the solutions of the problem. One presents also an integral method able to calculate the cut-off frequencies (thresholds of appearance of the guided modes) in an optical half coupler. The sixth chapter comprises numerical simulations by the two methods presented in the chapters two and fou
