Services Provided during the First Antenatal Care Visit in Maatooq Health Center, Gezira State, Sudan: A clinical Audit (2012 – 2013

Maternal and prenatal mortality remain a big challenge in Sudan, where the figures are amongst the highest in the world. Provision of adequate antenatal care especially the first visit is regarded as a cornerstone of maternal and prenatal health care. This study aims to evaluate the quality and standard of antenatal care services provide in Maatooq Health Center. This retrospective and descriptive audit study was done in Maatooq Health Center. It was conducted during the period November2012 to April 2013, in Maatooq town, Gezira state - Sudan. By using a checklist for data collection, all electronic patient record for pregnant women who attended Maatooq health center seeking antenatal care first visit service, during the study period, were checked for some criteria and statistically analyzed.The result of this study showed, some criteria were done either equal to or even higher than the standard, like: the registry in the EMR, advice about folic acid + FS + Ca, urine general and blood pressure, while some other criteria done nearly to the standard, like: LMP, plan for visits, any complains, past medical history of DM – HTN – Asthma, past obstetrical history of abortion, Hb, advice about vaccination, advice about monthly follow-up.The study showed some criteria were done sufficiently like; fundal level, L. L. Edema, HCG, advice about pregnancy, about nutrition and about the use of insecticide treated net.Some criteria were done poorly like; PET, C/S, weight and height, BMI, blood group, VDRL and ultrasound. Like most of the audit reports the research get the expected outcome, some of the reviewed criteria were done perfectly, some were done satisfactory and others were either not done or done poorly.
