الملخص
Asymptomatic Significant Bacteriuria in PregnancyAsymptomatic urinary tract infection is animportant risk factor for developing acute symptomaticinfection later in pregnancy, and it was also associated witha preterm labor, intra-uterinegrowth retardation and lowbirth weight infants. Thus routine screening for bacteriuirais advocated by several workers, and periodic testing ofurine for asymptomatic bacteriuria is necessary especiallyduring pregnancy. Accordingly, in thisstudy 145 pregnantand 65 control women were screened for the prevalence ofasymptomatic bacteriuria from.Jan.-2002 to March 2004.At Kkartoum Teaching Hospital (KTH), Omdurman Teaching Hospital(OTH), Elhikma Clinic (ELC), and Saudi Hospital for maternity (SAH).All the subjects were clinically identified to have no signs and symptomsof urinary tract infection. The age ranges of the study and control groupwere between 15-48 years for both groups. Urinalysis was performed fordetection of pyuria and bacteriuria, such findings were correlated to thepresence of significant bacteriuria. On the other hand the work included the study of selected factors thatcontribute to the increase in the prevalence of bacteriuria in pregnantwomen. Such factors included: Socioeconomic Status (education),Duration of gestation, Age, Previous UTI and Number of pregnancy(Parity).III- Bacteriological screening of mid-stream urine (MSU) revealed that12/145 (8.3%) and 4/65 (6.2%) were positive for asymptomaticbacteriuria in the study and control group respectively (p>0.05).- The most prevalent organism in this study was the E.coli(47.1%) of allbacteriuria patients.- The most effective antibiotics were ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone andAmikacin which were completely sensitive (100%), whereas Amoxycilinwas the least effective (8.3%).
