The Italians once unified hastened to Join the Scramble and had acquired a foot hold in African – horn, Eritrea in 1870 which was to lead to their claiming the whole in 1885 and Somali and as far as it was not already occupied by the British or French . Passed under Italian control in 1889 – But the Italians had lost the disastrous battle of Adowa to the native Ethiopians in 1896 , it was oral humiliation . Italy was ammeter of the victorious Alice coalition , she firsthand the first worl war with assigns of defeat – six undersell and fifty those and of her men had been lilled and one million wounded Industry slumped . Immediately after the war and with in a few months 10 percent of the inclustrial workers were unemployed prices rose rapidly and wages failed to keep up , as a result strikes and disorder became frwpuent . Italians governmel itself began almost at once to spread propaganda among the Italian people to the effect that Thais wartime allies were robbing them of the territories that had been promised them in exchange for their entry into the war Versailles Treaty of 1919 . The humiliation of Adow rankled with the Fascists who felt they had to show the world that there was more than rhetoric in theor talk about averred “Roman Empire” in 1934 afrintier incident at “Ualual” interest Italian Somali and or in Ethiopia for both sodas claimed the place-put the mattes before the international politicians , France and Britain were characteristically quite ready for appeasement of Italy partly because they happed to align Mussolini with them adjacent Hitler . they offered him almost everything concrete economic in October , 1935 Mussolini troops began the invasion of Ethiopia , Haile selassie . the Emperor of Ethiopia , had earlier in the year appealed to League of Nations which again had shown characteristic reluctance to act against a big power . Universal City of outrage became loud enough to induce the league Assembly to declare Italy an aggressor. The Italians had experienced successes and erversals in Africa they had conquered British Somali and in August 1940 , But from December on the Italians forces suffured a series of shattering defeats at the hands of allied forces – In february 1941 British forces re conquered British somalil and Eritrea and in may liberated Ethiopia where Emperor Haile Selassie after five years of exile resumed his rule . In July 1946 the victorious nations worked out the treaty with Italy by which Italy lost all her territories in Africa – Ethiopia’s independence was reformed , Eritrea of British occupying forces until United Nations could arrange apermamet settlement for them
