Management of Hypertension Disorders during Pregnancy at Wad Medani Teaching Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Wad Medani- Sudan

Hypertension complicate 6–8% of pregnancies and cause significant maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. This was a prospective hospital-based study conducted among 100 hypertensive pregnant women in third trimester at Wad Medani Teaching Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gezira state, Sudan. During the period from May 2019 to September 2019. The study aimed to assess management of hypertension disorders during pregnancy. Information was collected by using data collection form. Pregnant Women at first and second trimester were excluded. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 20. Most of study population was in the age group 31-40 (50%). There were 52% of patients from rural areas. Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) was found to be more in primigravidae (42%). Concerning gestational age there were 42% patients between 28-36 weeks. The most commonly used antihypertensive drug was methyldopa (41%) and some patients used combination therapy of methyldopa and calcium channel blockers (38%). Methyldopa controlled BP in 48% of the patients follwed by combination theraby (33%) then calcium channel blocker (18%). The anti-convulsant drug that commonly used was magnesium sulphate (8%) and there were only 22% of patients used aspirin while 23% of them used calcium supplement. The doses were different from patient to patient and the control of blood pressure was poor. The study concludes that 33% of the study population complicated by poor prenatal outcome in form of still birth, IUGR baby while 45 patients were preterm delivery.
