الملخص
God created plants on Earth before the creation of animals andman. God’s wisdom is that animals are bestowed with instinctivecapabilities to use only those plants that are needed for food or cure. However, Man has to exert a greater effort by utilising his mentalcapabilities and discover those plants that yield medication for hisailments.During the past decade, traditional systems of medicine havebecome a topic of global importance. Current estimates suggest that inmany devoloping countries a large proportion of the population reliesmainly on traditional practitioners and medicinal plants to meet primaryhealth care needs, despite the availability of modern medicines.Concurrently many people in developed countries have begun to turn toalternative or complementary therapies, including medicinal herbs, because many people believe that plants are more natural, safer, lesstoxic, can be made at home, less expensive than the manufactured drugsand in developing countries they are often more accessible and preserveforeign currency.Medicinal plants are now being given serious attention as isevidenced by the recommendation given by the World HealthOrganization in 1970 (Wondergen et al 1989), that proven traditionalremedies should be incorporated within national drug policies.Traditional medical practitioners constitute the most readilyavailableand in many cases, valuable health resources present in thecommunity; so they better have both botanical and medical training andother suitable qualifications.Sudan as one of the biggest countries in Africa has been giftedwith different climates resulting in a variety of types of medicinal plants.People in Sudan since early centuries have utilized these medicinal plantsfor different purposes such as cure, health or as cosmetics.Herbal medication has been empirical since early centuries andcontinued till the fifth century without being researched for the activeingredients and their efficacy and toxicity. After chemistry prosperity inthe nineteenth century rationalisation meant to find, identify and extractactive ingredients of plants through phyto-chemical, pharmacological andtoxicological studies.Nymphaea lotus and Loranthus acaciae are medicinal plants usedby native villagers to cure some ailments. This work is intended toscientifically study and evaluate extracts of these plants with a view toelucidating their toxicological effects.Main experimental animals chosen for this work are rats andchicks which are accessible and easy to handle.
