An Evaluation of the Project Workshop within the Competency Based Approach: The Case of Second Year Secondary School Learners

الملخص

The present dissertation aims at studying the project work evaluation within theCompetency Based Approach (CBA) at the El Oued Djilali Secondary School inTlemcen. The main issue of this study is to know whether learning activity isundertaken both by teachers and pupils appropriately. To see if teacher instructionsabout the project and pupils practices during the realization of the project helppromote the social learning. In order to investigate this matter, the researcherhypothesised that many teachers at the level of secondary school might considerthat the project is just a time consuming activity and an additional burden that doesnot bring any benefit to their pupils and thus might not give it too much importance,as well as the teachers’ attitude towards the project might be negative, we expectthat they do not use the adequate techniques to tackle this learning activity nor aretheir learners well guided to handle it in the way it may boost their learning.Toexamine these hypotheses, questionnaires were given to 57 pupils, andquestionnaires were given to six English teachers to know their attitudes towardsproject work evaluation. After analysing the data collected quantitatively, the resultsindicated that our research hypotheses were partially confirmed. The first oneconfirms that majority of teachers are aware about the project work and considerthat project work is a practical and beneficial tool of learning. Furthermore, thesecond hypotheses, results unveil that not all teachers’ attitude toward the Project isnegative and they do not use the adequate technique to tackle this learning activitynor are their learners well guided to handle it in the way it may boost their learning.
