Losses in Finished Broilers Due To Handling and Transportation to the Slaughterhouse

الملخص

This study was conducted to assess the dead on arrival (DOA), injuredor unhealthy finished broiler chickens during their handling and transportationfrom the growing farms to the processing plant of the Arab Poultry Productionand Processing Co. (APPPC). The experimental work was in the form of asurvey of 8 weeks duration. Regular visits were made to the company'sgrowing farms and processing plant during the five slaughtering days eachweek, and data was collected on each journey for the number of birds cratedand transported, journey time and total journey time and distance traveled byeach batch of birds. The birds on arrival to the processing plant were inspectedfor physical conditions and the injured, unhealthy and DOA birds wererecorded. Post-mortem examination was made on a random sample of 100DOA birds to determine the causes of mortality.The number of surveyed birds was 429301 unsexed broiler chickens(Ross 308), which has been transported to the processing plant in 231journeys. The number of DOA birds was 1055, reaching 0.246% of the totalnumber. Post-mortem examination revealed that the main causes of death wereheat stress, suffocation and loading and unloading injuries, at a percentage of76, 16 and 8% respectively of the total DOA . The results also indicatedmarked effects of environmental temperature and associated month and seasonof the year ; and time of journey and distance traveled on the percentage DOA.
