الملخص

Background: Metabolic syndrome is a combination of risk disorders associated with a high risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. It is evolved with age, dietary habits as well as genetic and environmental factors, including insulin resistance, visceral obesity, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension. Hypovitaminosis D has been implicated several chronic diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Low vitamin D (VD) status is common at older age. The evidence in support of the effect of vitamin D deficiency on metabolic syndrome among postmenopausal women is inconsistent. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the association between vitamin D status and metabolic syndromes among postmenopausal women Method: This is a cross-sectional comparative study, in which ninety postmenopausal women aged ? 44 years old with amenorrhea >12 months, without VD supplementation, established serious medical illness and 2nd / 3rd degree burn injury were included. Clinical and anthropometric data were collected through pre-tested questionnaire. Biochemical parameters, including 25- hydroxyvitamin-D [25(OH)D], total cholesterol (TC), HDL, LDL, triglycerides, glucose, insulin, and CBC were measured. Women meeting three or more of the following criteria were diagnosed with MetS: waist circumference >88cm, fasting glucose ?100mg/dl, systolic/ diastolic BP ?130/85, triglycerides ?150mg/dL, HDL 0.05). Low VD level was associated with low dietary intake specially cheese and fish (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in postmenopausal women, only interrelated with the systolic blood pressure, marginally associated with high blood pressure. It is not associated with metabolic syndrome and other corresponding risk factors. Women with low dairy intake suffer minimal levels of the vitamin.
