الملخص

This study was designed to avail base line information about theepidemiology of the African Animal Trypanosomiasis in the area of Unity State,Southern Sudan and the role of ethno-veterinary practices in the area of study inidentification of the disease.300 blood films were prepared during the dry and wet seasons of 2003 fromThoan, Rubkona, Dandok and Abiemnom villages in Unity State. Parallel withthe parasitic survey a clinical data from three different clinics in Thoan, Dandokand Mirmir were analyzed. A participatory survey also was conducted, usingtechniques of, participatory mapping, seasonal calendars and proportionalpiling. The results from the parasitic survey showed only T. vivax in all of thepositive smears with a rate of 15% in the dry season compared to 6% in the wetseason. Comparing the rates of African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT)between the breeds and seasons gave the result of 4 % of the samples collectedfrom Nilotic cattle breed during the dry season were positive compared to 13 %positive samples collected from the Baggara cattle breed. This is while 3.13 %samples were positive from the Nilotic breed during the wet season compared to11.11 % positive samples from the Baggara breed. Most of the fly samplescollected were identified as Tabanus taeniola and quite few Atylotus agrestis. The results from the clinical data analysis revealed a proportionalmorbidity rate of 44.11% in the dry season and 26.24% in the wet season. The results from the participatory epidemiological investigations revealedthat AAT is very well identified in the ethno-veterinary knowledge of both ofthe Nuer informant groups (disease name Liei) and Misseria informant groups(Disease name is El. Fasokh). They both use different integrated methods forcontrolling the AAT in their areas, but the Misseria are more depending on themodern AAT treatments like Ethidium while the Nuer are more in using thehusbandry methods first and then the Ethidium when available. TheVproportional morbidity rate from the proportional piling results was 7 % for theMisseria compared with 20.5 % for the Nuer. The informant group from theMisseria ranked the AAT according to its importance to be in the fourth placewhile the Nuer groups ranked it in the third place. The study suggested a seasonal pattern of prevalence of AAT in the studyarea to be more prevalent during the dry season than the wet season. The studyalso suggested that may be the Nilotic cattle breeds have more toleratingcapacity for AAT than the Baggara cattle breed.
