- Though the base of the host-pathogenic interactions in some plants are currently well elucidated (either in physiological, metabolic or molecular level), in the date palm Phoenix dactylifera L., the investigations have just started. The present work aims to improve our understanding of the interactions installed between the antagonists “resistant cultivar - pathogen” and “susceptible cultivar – pathogen” by relying, in particular, on the involvement of lipids and phenolic compounds in these relationships. Such approach could facilitate the genetic material selection and allows orientation towards a better valorization of sensitive cultivars. Our results show that, against aggressions caused by the pathogen F. oxysporum f. sp. albedinis, the date palm is implementing preventive systems; but also resistance mechanisms induced by the pathogen itself. These processes activate lipids’ and phénylpropanoïds’ metabolic ways. In resistant cultivar, two principal defense strategies are elucidated: the first one is based on reinforcement of the constitutive mechanical barriers by affixing of suberin plates, polyester to lipidic (aliphatic) and polyphenolic (aromatic) domains. This process returns the cell wall tight and impermeable to pathogen progression in root. The alpha-monoolein (monoglyceride) constitutes the aliphatic domain and hydroxyhydrocinnamic acid the aromatic domain of exodermis and/or endodermis of the date palm root. The second hypothetical one aims to activate the programmed death process or necroses induced by two saponins steroids. Diosgenin and Yamogenine are revealed only in the resistant cultivar. Faced the pathogen, sensitive cultivar accumulates considerable proportions of para-hydroxybenzoïc acid in roots. Despite the abundance of this antifungal compound, the pathogen penetrates in to root by crossing the constitutive physical barriers and develops in the plant. Following these new approaches, it is interesting to consider application of stimulators of natural defenses by artificial way, providing to sensitive host the substances being able to induce on its level, the mechanisms of defense which can’t apply towards its pathogen.
