الملخص
This study is an attempt to collect, identify and prepare from extractstwo local medicinal plants: Coccina grandis, traditionally used to treattopical dermatitis, and Cucumis figareisused for treating gonorrhea. Weattempted to isolate the active ingredients of these two medicinal plants, determine their phytochemistry, identify their physiochemical propertiesaccording to their biological activity and elucidate their chemical formulaeand structures. The authentication of these two medicinal plants was performedusing Herbarium sheets. Determination of their physicochemical properties, general phytochemical screening tests, different chromatographic methodsand various spectroscopic methods, were performed after extraction thecontinuous extraction method (Soxhlet) regardless of the effect oftemperature. The methanolic extract of ripe and unripe fruits of Coccina grandisandfruits of Cucumis figareisyielded much more extracts than chloroformicextract. When applied on five different standard bacteria and two standardfungi, the extracts of each part has significant anti-bacterial effect, particularly the methanolicextract. However, they lacked any inhibitoryeffect on fungi:On the other hand, preliminary phyto-chemical screening testsrevealed availability of some components which weretaken as an evidencefor the presence of secondary metabolites.Based on its high anti-microbial activity and reasonable yieldpercentage, the methanol extract was selected for the rest of the study. Thisselection was supported by the available data from the traditional use ofxiiiCoccina grandisin the treatment of topical dermatitis, and Cucumis figareisin treatment of gonorrhea. When Thin Layer Chromatography was applied, using differentsolvent system, sprayed with Vanillin Sulphuric acid, the extract exhibitedvisible spots with various colours. Gas-Liquid Chromatography was usedafter it had undergone the methylation process. In this case the extractsshowed components identifiable when compared with the standarddocumented substancesCorrelation of G.C results with the Mass-Spectroscopic results madeit possible to elucidate molecular structures of the methanolic extractcomponents compared with the established standard documented substances.Cucumis Figareisfruit was selected for the rest of study; this selectionwas supported by column chromatographic result.
