Estimation of Folic Acid Level in Childbearing Women In Gezira State , Sudan 2014-2015

الملخص

The Objective of this study was estimation the folate level in reproductive age women, in areas of high incidence of Neural tube defects (NTDs) in Gezira state . it was a Cross-sectional community based study , random sampling were used , samples were collected from 100 unmarried women 50 sample from wad-Madani locality , and another 50 from South Gazira locality , aged from 18- 42 years . Demographic and health information was collected via questionnaire; a Biological sample were collected by medical technologists, the binding assay for the in vitro quantitative determination of folate in human serum and, it was estimated by immunoassay by cobas e 411. Demographic and health variables, food frequency, and folate status were the main outcomes of this study , only 8% in southern Gazira and 42% in Madani had knowledge about dietary sources of folic acid , Mean plasma folate was 6.4 ng/mL in southern Gazira, 7.7 ng/ml in Madani, which was indicative of wide public health problem. Thus, NTDs was clearly a concern throughout Gazira state come from folate deficiency. About 10% of women had severe folate deficiency (≤ 4 ng/mL) and 31% of the sample had marginal folate deficiency (> 4–6.6 ng/mL), while 53% had optimal levels of serum folate (> 6.6 ng/mL) ). The region of southern Gezira locality was significantly affected with folate deficiency more than wad Madani locality. In Conclusion Folate deficiency is widespread in childbearing single women in Gazira, emphasising the need for sustainable folate intake through dietary diversification and appropriate public prenatal health measures. such as supplementation during the periconceptional period and efforts to promote greater utilisation of maternal health and care services. of folate are lower than are needed to support a healthy pregnancy, an investigation of the magnitude of neural tube defect and other pregnancy issues in the country is recommended.
