الملخص

Oral cancers are considered as one the threatening cancers in Sudan due to their bad prognosis. The objective of this study was to investigate the expression of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR), Cytokeratin 5 and Cytokeratin 19 in squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma in Sudanese patients in Khartoum. 52 (27 males and 25 females) paraffin embedded cancerous oral tissue samples and 20 normal oral tissues were obtained from the histopathology laboratories of Khartoum teaching hospital, national health laboratory, Radiation and Isotope Center in Khartoum (RICK) and Khartoum dentistry hospital. However, the tissues were (1) Squamous cell carcinoma (47), (2) and Adenocarcinomas (5). This study was conducted after approval from the ethical committees of Gezira University and the Sudan ministry of health. Immunohistochemistry technique was used to determine the expression of the analyses. Regarding the results of EGFR staining 6 (12.7%) of the squamous carcinoma were negative while 41 (87%) were positive. The results of the cytokeratin 5 showed that half of the cancerous tissues were positive (25, 43.2%). 4 (8.6%) of the squamous carcinoma were positive for cytokeratin 19 and 45 (91.4%) were negative. 100% of adenocarcinoma EGFR positive, all CK5 adenocarcinoma patients were negative, and 60% of adenocarcinoma CK19 were positively. The staining of the normal tissues showed negative results for all the analyses. EGFR staining may be a promising marker which can be used as a target for oral cancers therapy. However, the Cytokeratins results illustrated the need for personalized oncology. EGFR recommended to be used in the diagnosis of squamous carcinoma and CK19 should not be used. In order to generalize the findings of this study it should be repeated in large scale and the diagnosis should be included by other techniques like Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH).
