الملخص
Many plant products have been used previously to improve human life in traditional medicines, food components, or as biocides. The aim of this study was to determine the phytochemical and GC-MS components of Garlic (Allium sativum L.) bulbs, Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) rhizome and Clove (Syzygium aromaticum L.) pods and to evaluate their biological effects using mosquito's larvae as bioindicators. The plant materials were brought from the local market of Wad Medani City, Gezira State, Sudan, whereas mosquito's larvae were brought from the insectary of the Blue Nile National Institute for Communicable Diseases (BNNICD), University of Gezira. Phytochemical screening and the biological effect tests were run at Laboratories of Faculty of Engineering and Technology, whereas GC-MS applications were conducted at the Central Laboratory, University of Gezira. The results showed that, Saponnins, flavonoids, tannins and alkaloids were detected in clove pods, whereas, saponnins, flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids and steroids were detected in ginger rhizome and similar phytochemicals were noticed in garlic bulbs, except it lacks alkaloids. 40 compounds were identified through GC-MS from clove pods of which are eugenol, caryophyllene, γ-sitosterol and humulene. Also 40 compounds were identified from ginger rhizome of which the alkaloid: gingerol, zingiberene and other sesquiterpenes were detected. 31 compounds were identified from the garlic bulbs of which the saturated fatty acids: octadecanoic acid, sucrose, Trisulfide, di-2-propenyl and Diallyl disulphide were detected. Aedes larvae were relatively more susceptible to the extracts of clove pods than the other two species of mosquitoes. The ethanol extract of clove pods and ginger rhizome were more potent than the aqueous extract, in reverse to the extracts of garlic bulbs. Anopheles larvae were relatively more susceptible to the extracts of ginger and garlic than the other two species of mosquitoes. Some morphological deformities were noticed on mosquito's larvae on their body, mandibles, coloration in addition to their digestive tract. While in pupal stage the incomplete emergence to adult, in addition to some emerged adult that still attached to the pupal case were noticed, while some adults were emerged with short wings or with only 3-legs. More intensive studies are needed to recommends on scientific bases on uses of these products to improve human lives.
