Transformation is a subject that deals not only in scientific evolution and growing actions but also in Urbanism and Architecture .In This sense, the balanced development of the city will provide it with new changeable environment where the "New" comes from changing and "Growing" comes from Upgrading .Analyzing design transformations of residential Architecture in Syria since Independence till today are not only a goal themselves, but they also contribute to overview their changes as well as to give a different vision of their developing actions in relation with the various factors that affect the design process, in order to fill in the gab between the theoretical thoughts represented by the designers, and the real changing needs of users. It could be easily noticing various forms and types in residential architecture in Syria influenced by laws, legislations and land dividing of the city. Most of these types don't fit with the architectural demands in issue of function and exterior formation of facades, as well as the construction materials. These types don't response to the changeable needs of the inhabitants as well .The importance of the research comes from emphasizing on architects to consider the necessity of understanding the needs of the inhabitants which are in a continuous changing, also to observe the different factors that affect and lead to the transformations on residential architecture (multi-family housing ).In addition to that, an important issue is to use modern methods and strategies that could analyze and present the results of the various questionnaires that interrogate the design transformations. The target of the research aims to follow and define the reasons which caused the transformations of Residential buildings design, especially in Aleppo ,specifically multi-family housing, and the different factors that affected their transformations for designing the residential areas in the future, particularly multi-family housing. The Methodology of the research relied on two vital points: -First :a theoretical aspect, through with all the information and thoughts were collected: Forms and types of the residential architecture in Aleppo considering their development since the independence till today, then they were followed by defining the factors that contributed to create these forms and types.-Second: is the practical applied side, where a special questionnaire was designed for the inhabitants another one for the experts about the effective factors on designing of the house, then a comparisons was made between the results of the inhabitants questionnaire and those of the experts, to reach some rules and guidelines that help finding design alternatives in the future .The plan and the program of the research consists of four chapters divided into several sections involving connected points in addition to the introduction.-The first chapter is an introduction aims to understand the urban and architecture transformation, it explains theoretical concepts in the domain of urban and architecture, as well the features of the residential architecture development in Aleppo since independence till today. Then it views the methods used in the strategic management in construction such as Delphi, Portfolio, and Cross Impact Analysis in order to choose the suitable one and use it to study the design transformation on multi-family housing. -The second chapter discusses the affecting factors on the design transformations of the residential architecture through the Cross Impact Analysis method, which is mainly used in construction, but choosing it in architecture domain is for many reasons and in this research. The Cross Impact Analysis deals with 12 different factors and specify each one of them.-The Third chapter presents the field study for the multi-family housing in Aleppo since independence till now using the Cross Impact Analysis method, and the basics of the 10 chosen areas in Aleppo forming the study areas, and the buildings belonging to them. The point of view of the inhabitants as well as the experts's were analyzed, and then a comparison was made to come to the conclusions. This process was done for the very ten areas.-The fourth chapter deals with the future developing directions of the residential architecture of the city of Aleppo. So the results of the previous chapter were analyzed from the point view of both inhabitants and experts, and the definition for the main transformations had happened in the whole city(the studied areas) influenced by the 12 factors was set. After comparing the results and evaluating them, the conclusions and then recommendations are reached. Many Arabic and foreign up to date and recent references were used in this research
