الملخص
Nutritional assessment of lactating women is one of the most important topics in maternal and child health. Lactation is an anabolic state with an even greater maternal nutritive stress than pregnancy. The energy value of the milk excreted in just 4 months is equivalent to the total energy cost of pregnancy. Changes associated with the nutrition state of lactating women described as breastfeeding enhance the rate of weight loss postpartum; prolong lactation contributes to depletion of maternal energy reserves. This study is aimed to determine the prevalence of malnutrition among lactating women, to evaluate the dietary intake of lactating women and to identify the risk factors of malnutrition among lactating women. This study was conducted at four health clinics in Gaza Strip. A quantitative analytic, cross sectional design was conducted, to collect data from randomly selected four centers. The sample of 235 subjects was randomly selected and met the inclusion criteria. An exit interviewed questionnaire was used as a tool for data collection with structured closed ended questions, Analysis of data was done using SPSS. The study results showed that prevalence of overweight & obesity was 30.5% and 20.6% among lactating women. About 66.5% of the respondent women had waist /hip ratio >0.8, and 67.4 % have waist/height ratio ≥0.5. Regarding waist circumference, 39.5% of the women have waist circumference ≥87.5. Only 2.6% of the lactating women have underweight. Prevalence of waisting was 19.3%. While prevalence of low triceps skin fold is 28.2%. Prevalence of anemia among lactating women was 42.5%. Factors significantly associated with malnutrition as overweight & obesity were age, family number, consumption of red & white meat, tea drink, period of lactation, meals number, knowledge to assess weight, opinion about weight, post natal care, gravidity and mode of delivery. The results of this study showed that Palestinian women whenever she lives in city, camp or village are of high risk of double burden of malnutrition where under nutrition among women co-exists with nutrition of excess, demonstrated by high prevalence of overweight & obesity . There is urgent need to spread awareness about obesity and anemia, its consequences and the ways of preventing, health dietary habits and change their behavior towards these health problems. Encourage breastfeeding for 2 years and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for 6 months is recommended. These results shed light on the most important risks to the women during this period, which requires more health care and nutrition.
