الملخص

This paper consists of two sections. The first section is comprised of a comprehensive literature review pertaining to what has been historically said and done regarding corporate social responsibility. The review embarks on defining corporate social responsibility and stating its types. Then, various issues under the CSR umbrella are fleshed out featuring the several view points of CSR experts and scholars. Further, the importance of individual traits, motives and ethics in promoting corporate social responsibility, are tackled; in addition to the corporate culture and societal values in the same regard. It also highlights some similarities and differences in the personal value system across individual managers and entrepreneurs such as managers being driven by sense of duty versus self-interest in light of a given corporate culture. This literature will be taken one step further to compare and measure the attributes and values of senior managers and entrepreneurs which catalyze their corporate social responsibility practices across different organizational cultures, within the Lebanese community context. The application component will study demographic, economic, cultural, and behavioral variables across businesses in Lebanon, which would help in distinguishing between the types of managers who endorse or reject CSR, given their fundamental attributes. Moreover, the interconnection of the three value systems (personal, corporate, social) and their impact on managerial attitude towards CSR is studied in depth. Conclusions and recommendations are outlined in light of the findings. Primary and secondary data are utilized to prepare the application part and the literature review respectively. Primary data mainly consists of Semi-structured interviews with senior managers and entrepreneurs in various business sectors in Lebanon. These interviews tackle their awareness of the subject and their specific CSR practices; incorporating specific questions which reveals their personal attributes, values, and attitudes towards the concept under study. As for secondary data, it basically includes literature gathered from books, e-journals, and articles in business magazines such as Harvard Business review.
