الملخص

The effect of tannic acid or sorghum gluten feed (as natural source of tannin) on performance and some minerals metabolism in broiler chicks was investigated in this study. Experiment (1) was carried out to counteract the detrimental effect of tannin and tannic acid by addition of twice the normal levels of calcium and available phosphorus. Experiment (2) was conducted to study the effect of sodium and/or potassium supplementation on sorghum gluten feed based diets to overcome the mal effect of tannin. Feeding low calcium, phosphorus with sorghum gluten feed (60%) resulted in significantly poor growth rate and feed efficiency as compared to that observed when high calcium, phosphorus with sorghum gluten feed (60%) or tannic acid (0.5%) and low calcium, phosphorus with tannic acid were fed. 33% of the chicks fed the diet containing low calcium, phosphorus with tannic acid (0.5%) exhibited leg abnormalities as compared to 13.3% noted in birds fed low calcium, phosphorus with sorghum gluten feed (60%) diet. The incidence of leg abnormalities was low (0.0-6.7%) for chicks fed high calcium, phosphorus with sorghum gluten feed or tannic acid. A little response in weight gain and feed/ gain ratio was noted when potassium and/or sodium were added to sorghum gluten feed based diet. In experiment (1) and (2) there were no significant differences between dietary treatments, as for liver ash and protein, but liver fat was significantly increased by dietary tannin. The dietary treatments had no significant effect on tibia ash, mineral, content of tibia ash or mineral content of liver ash, for the following minerals: calcium, phosphorus, manganese, magnesium, zinc and copper (expt. 1) sodium and potassium (expt. 2).
