Transurethral Resection of the Prostate Criteria of Selection of the Patients, Anaesthesia - and Postoperative Course in Soba University Hospital (1999-2003)

This study was carried out to determine the indications andcriteria of patients selection for TURP and to reviews, type ofanesthesia, hospital stay and whole post operative courseincluding the complication in Soba University Hospital (SUH) inthe period (1999 – 2003).One hundred patients who had undergone TURP in (SUH) inthe period of the study. All the records were retrospectivelystudied.The mean age was 66.7 years. Duration of symptomsrange between one week and 20 years with a mean of 2.33years. LUTS were observed in all patents. Irrigative symptomswere predominate urine retention noted in 40%, whilehaematruia in 19% of the patients.The most important guidelines for patients selection weresize of the prostate which was small to moderate in most of thepatients .The most common indications for TURP was LUTS incombination with other symptoms in 63%, while LUTS alone wasthe indications in 37% of the patients.Preoperative preparation were done for all patients, withpre-anaesthesiatic evaluations. The most common type ofanesthesia used was regional (spinal or epidural)IXin (92%) of the patients there were no complicationsobserved due to anesthesia.There were no death in the study. Intraoperativecomplications occurred in 5%, immediate post operativecomplication occurred in 13%, and late postoperativecomplications occurred in 33.9%. of the patients.The commonest complications noted were bleedingrequired transfusion in 4%, infection in 6%, TUR syndrome in1%, urine retention in 3%, and urethral stricture in 6.4% ofthe patients.The catheter was removed within the first 48 hourspost TURP in most of the patients (59 %). Most of thepatients discharged from the hospital between 4 – 6 days (56%).Incidental finding of the prostate reported in a rate of 7% ofthe patients.This study showed that TURP accompanied with veryLow morbidity and no mortality. Post operativecatheterization and hospital stay were only few days. SoTURP remain the golden procedure for treatment of BPH.
