الملخص

Vocabulary items play an important role in teaching and learning foreign languages. Teaching vocabulary effectively requires preparing and planning. Teachers need to ensure that students are spending time learning words that are most useful to a range of activities that will help them learn vocabulary. This study aimed to investigate the problems of teaching vocabulary, to know the vocabulary teaching strategies that teachers need to use in teaching vocabulary, to find the effective methods in teaching at secondary schools. The study adopted the descriptive analytical method using Statistical Package for Social Sciences programme (SPSS). A questionnaire and a test were used as tools for data collection from fifty (50) EFL teachers and sixty (60)EFL students. The study came out with many findings. The most important ones are: teachers did not use effective methods in teaching vocabulary, teachers mostly employed fully contextual strategy meanwhile determination and Meta cognitive strategy were found as the most favored ones by students. The study also confirm that there was a significant relationship between students' vocabulary learning strategy and vocabulary mastery, and teachers did not try to convey the meaning to the class without using translation, teachers at secondary schools did not motivate their students to learn vocabulary and teachers did not make adequate monthly tests in vocabulary, the strategies used in teaching vocabulary were not suitable for students level, and the teacher did not try to get the meaning to the class through English. The study recommends that EFL teachers should give enough time to present vocabulary in the EFL classes and to use effective methods and strategies in teaching. Contextual and de-contextual strategies should be recommended to introduce students to various kinds of vocabulary learning strategies, teachers at secondary schools should motivate their students to learn vocabulary and teachers should try to convey the meaning to the class without using translation, teachers should make adequate monthly tests in vocabulary, and students at secondary schools should be encouraged to do enough exercises in vocabulary inside classrooms.
