AbstractThe concept of social, cultural and political pluralism, which have been emerged in the second half of the 20th century as a model life, has had its impact through establishing various ideas and architectural schools. Consequently, it becomes difficult to distinguish between these schools and architectural styles. To resolve this problem, lots of researches were carried out and many books and translations can be found in the libraries, all of which attempting to differentiate between architectural schools and styles as well as determining their characteristics. This is on architectural level, while this trend in interior design is still promising as the interior design was newly educated in most Arab universities, therefore, information on this subject in general and on architectural thought; reasons for its diversity, can scarcely be found.This study discusses the subject of interior architectural design and reviewing the intellectual concepts associated with its development; starting from the Renaissance period and ended with the establishment of different architectural schools in the second half of the 20th century. It also elaborates on the contradictions in the development between modernism and postmodernism and analyzes them in order to answer some questions usually asked on this period, especially those reasons behind the differences and diversity of material production of the interior design both at the level of the spatial organization or on its formulation.Indeed, studying pluralistic intellectual concepts Western architecture and analyze it so as to take advantage from their experiences in the Arab world, taking into consideration intellectual concepts correspond with the cultural and technical dimensions in the Arab world. These will create the solid platform to establish an architectural vocabulary able to contribute to the formulation of new spatial configurations compatible in form and content with the requirements of the Arabs.The study concludes that the intellectual differences affect significantly the space, form and order of the interior architecture; so these has had a direct influence on the formation of the buildings in the architecture of modernism and postmodernism.
