- Enterococci are part of the normal intestinal flora of animals and humans. Several studies have shown that enterococci of animal origin may represent a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes for the human and animal community. The objectives of the present study were to gather information on the use of antibiotics in poultry farming, as overuse of antibiotics is the major risk factor for the development of antibiotic resistance. Then, in a second step, to evaluate the digestive carriage of the different strains of enterococci in poultry and to study their resistance to the different families of antibiotics. The questionnaire survey of 134 practicing veterinarians showed that therapeutic failures are encountered in nearly90% of cases and that laboratory diagnosis is most often used after therapeutic failures. The study of the digestive carriage of Enterococcus species in poultry showed the predominance of two species, namely E.faecalis and E.faecium. A total of 278 strains of enterococci isolated from poultry were tested for antibiotic susceptibility using the agar diffusion method. A panel of ten antibiotics was tested. High percentages of resistance to Tetracycline and Erythromycin were observed (90.65% and 69.06% respectively), low levels of resistance to Penicillin, Ciprofloxacin, Nitrofurantoin and Chloramphenicol with levels of 07.91%, 04.68%, 03.60% and 01.08% respectively. Resistance to high concentrations of Aminoglycosides has been recorded (Streptomycin 17.99% and Gentamycin 04.32%). However, all strains were susceptible to Vancomycin and Ampicillin.
